reusing breast pump - what to wash and what to get new?

Today I'm going through my pump stuff (Medela PISA) for DC #2 and I kept everything from pumping for DD. I'm trying to decide what I need to re-buy and what I can just wash and reuse. I'm thinking I should order new tubes and membranes but what about the bottles I pumped into? Is sterilizing them enough? And the breast shields? I exclusively pumped for DD for about 10 months if that gives you an idea of how much the stuff was used. Also, any tips on cleaning the motor part? Thanks!

Re: reusing breast pump - what to wash and what to get new?

  • I also EP'ed for Little Man for a little over a year.  I planned on using the same breast shields, connectors, etc but replacing membranes and tubing.  The bottles I plan on sterilizing and reusing (buying new nipples, though).

I'm wanting to clean the motor, but haven't begun looking around for instructions.  Maybe someone else can chime in and give us some insight?

  • I didn't think it was possible to clean the motor, which is why the boxes say that it is a single-user pump? I could be wrong though.

  • Page Taytee...I'm pretty sure she cleaned her motor.
  • From what I've read, you should not have to clean the motor parts because the milk doesn't come in contact with the motor.  You definatley need new tubing and I"d just get new flanges or whatever they're called just because the other ones were used for so long.
  • You can clean down to the inner membrane by popping the faceplate off, I can't find the link at the moment but I'll keep looking!  When you take off the faceplate and see the round plastic diapraghm, that IS the membrane. Do not try to get under that. Only metal is under there. I almost broke my pump forever! But if you wipe down that part, you know for sure that not even condensation reached it and started to grow anything. I always had lots of condensation in my tubes so I replaced those every 3 months anyway. I also got new membranes and replaced them every 2-3 months since I felt I lost some suction when I didn't.  The hospital will generally give you a kit if you ask! It will have tubes for the hospital system pumps but if you cut that adaptor off, voila PISA tubes. Check twice to make sure you're not cutting off the wrong end though ;) I almost made that mistake.
