3rd Trimester

Tell me about your breastfeeding class

Ours is tonight. It's two hours long put on by lactation specialists from the hospital. What do we do for two hours?

Don't be an ass and say "learn about breastfeeding". This is obvious to me but I want details.

Re: Tell me about your breastfeeding class

  • Ours was really informative-they talked about different positions of holding the baby while bf-ing, they talked about all the different pumps and feeding schedules.  That was the main gist of it, they discussed other things too but those were the main things they focused on...have fun!

  • I won't be an ass :) They'll talk about how to begin in the hospital after your LO is born. Correct positioning vs incorrect. Scheduling and timing for nursing. Tricks to make things easier. Pumping. How your partner can be involved in the process. Where to go for help, etc. DH and I LOVED the class and felt much more confident when it was over. It was great having DH there. After DD was born and I was having numerous breakdowns about her not latching on correctly, he was calm and knew how to help me since he was at the class. Have a great time.
  • We learned about different ways to hold the baby to BF, the difference between productive and non-productive sucking, and latching techniques.
  • We went to one and it was 3 hours and we really enjoyed it!

You learn about the physiological changes in your body that occur to allow breastfeeding, you learn latching techniques, different ways to hold the baby while nursing, pumping, do & don'ts in terms of diet, alcohol, drugs/medications..

You might watch a video....I think that was about it.   I am really glad we took it and in case your DH/SO is worried about being the only guy, every body in our class was a couple!

  • I took one right after I gave birth. They'll show you a video, proper latching, how to tell if the baby is getting milk, different holds, how to use a nursing pillow, how to nurse laying down, what to do if you're having low supply, how to stimulate baby to suckle, signs baby is hungry and much more. Even though you are going to take this class I still suggest you have an lc come see you after baby is born to make sure you have a proper latch and such.

  • The lady who did our class was awesome. She gave us handouts and talked all about what to expect and answered a ton of our questions. She also had dolls that we used to practice the different positions, like the "football hold", etc.
  • Thanks ladies!

One question- is there a certain formula that they suggest to supplement if LO isn't getting enough to eat? I have been buying/registering for breastfeeding friendly pacifiers and bottles, but I didn't know about getting a can of formula incase my milk doesn't come in soon enough. I'm sure the hospital will help with that, I'm just curious now.

  • thanks for this post! I also have my first BF class tonight and was wondering what we'd talk about for 2 hours....seemed like a long time but I am glad that people found it so helpful!
  • I am taking a similar class on Thursday night, but my partner doesn't want to go with me.  She thinks I can handle this class by myself this time I guess.. I am not sure why she has "step-out" when she was involved with everything else?  Could it be related to her experience with breast cancer (she's a survivor of almost 10 years now)?

its actually very rare that a woman can't breastfeed exclusively. ONLY supplement if your child is either not gaining weight or is losing weight. If you start formula too soon it will hurt your supply not help it. If you're worried about your supply get fenugreek pills and take two of them every four hours. Also don't introduce a bottle to your child until about 4 weeks old so you give your supply time to come in properly, don't pump until then either. Pumping too early can create an imbalance of foremilk and hindmilk, That being said every child is different and will respond to different formulas differently so it will very much depend on your childs preference.
