I was reading Forbes magazine this weekend and I saw an ad that caught my attention. There's a clinic in Barbados with supposedly high success rate that offer IVF cycles for half the cost of what you'd pay in the US. The clinic has doctor from the US and Europe and also most of the patients are from UK, other parts of Europe and the US. I spent like 5 mins in their website now and the whole concept is balancing mind and body. You spend 14 days in the Caribbean in a hotel with your spouse, trying to relax and enjoy nature while simultaneously your doing your IVF cycle. It got me wondering, if you're OOP and it comes to IVF being the next step, would you go to a clinic outside the US? I grew up in the Caribbean so I know how good doctors are there, having said that, I'm not 100% comfortable with doing that. I mean we're talking about saving $5 -6K and when you're OOP that's a chunk of money, so I guess I can't say for sure that I'd do it but I wouldn't rule it out either
Re: Have you heard of Barbados Fertility Centre?
Absolutely! In fact, I've been thinking about it already. Our insurance covers 3 attempts, so if we have to go to a 4th I'd seriously consider doing it out of the country.
Barbados sounds like a great vacation anyway!
2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14
I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
Have you research that clinic?

I'm looking at their website right now! I like that they deal with the MFI stuff right there. I've done some research on clinics in Costa Rica, and I don't think they deal with the MFI side of things.
That is a plus! I know that some clinics don't deal with all types of IF. Forbes magazine did a little article about them and it also had an ad.

That's true a bout the meds even though their article claims that with travel and lodging in a 3 star hotel, the total cost is between $5 to 7,000 as opposed to $10-$15k. I know in my clinic IVF is close to $20k I could do multiple cycles in Barbados with that price and they also do FET. I would still be hesitant but from the financial point of view it makes sense.
It took 5 failed IUIs and a failed IVF, but our FET worked!

Do you know if you can buy your meds in the US? My insurance covers my meds.
Haha! I'm definitely getting ahead of myself. Whenever I see pictures of the Carribean I get all excited and want to start planning! I hope neither of us end up having to take one of these vacations, but if we do, this place looks like a great option.
I agree

Hey ladies,
One of you was nice enough to give me a head's up on this topic.. so I thought I'd pop by and saw Hi. (:::: waves hi::::)
We're pretty much all set to head to Costa Rica April 30th. We're OOP and I'm tired of loosing babies (7) and I'm actually looking at this trip more of a "diagnostic vacation" than insisting I get pregnant. We have been told by tons of docs that my eggs are to blame for our losses, yet all my tests come back normal. So doing IVF will tell us a TON. If I happen to get pregnant, great. Have a couple left over for a FET? even better.
Here's a C&P of a "ditty" I share when people ask me about this trip, I'm happy to answer any questions about our trip if you want. Myself and another nestie, Christa, will be blogging daily about this once we lock and load. (in a week or two)
GL to all of you.
Here:
Here's the website that originally got me going on this. (well, it's really Christa's fault, I was thinking of Thailand, lol)

The guy who started this company, Mark, (he's one of several "medical tourism facilitators" out there) b/c him and his wife have had IF issues, and are actually cycling down there in May with us. I like working with him.
The hospital info, Dr. Perez, etc. are all on this site. They do all kinds of "extras" such as super-ICSI, embyo glue, etc. included in the price.
The fees are $2700 total, no hidden fees, etc. and then plus meds and plus travel. This Mark guy (above) will line it all up for you, for a tiny (tiny! ) fee, or you can go solo like we are, b/c we're using points/rewards, etc.
So with a daily allowence, airfares, etc. this whole thing will cost us just under $5K total. yup. total.
and we would go on vacation here anyways, as we LOVE Costa Rica and have always wanted to go to Panama. (You stim in CR, then fly an hour with the doc to Panama City for ER/ET)
So I can handle a BFN under these circs. I can't (personally) cope with a $20K BFN.
;-)
I'm happy to help any way I can. If for some reason you thought you want to consider cycling in May, we head down April 30th, (Christa and I, with our girls) and then the boys will meet us around May 11th. You can join us if you want!

I've definitely heard about people going abroad for fertility treatments. In fact I started a new website for it (www.globalivf.com). That said, I did look at their stats and while they promote themselves as having higher stats than the US you should know that there are many clinics in the US that are way above their success rate. Of course, the cost is way above theirs too. So you have to weigh it out -- lower stats, cheaper costs, nice trip. Also, in looking at their stats you have to also take into consideration what your own fertility situation is -- why aren't you conceiving? Has your clinic done all of the necessary testing if you've done a few tries and haven't succeeded? Like advanced tests on your uterine lining, dna fragmentation on the sperm? Immune testing? Sometimes a change of clinic won't increase your odds of conceiving if you are still bringing the same obstacles with you.
That said, my final word is -- lots of people are going abroad and having success with treatments -- but with the lower costs you usually have a lower odds of success...but at least 50% of the people that go come home pregnant -- and 100% of the people get a nice trip to Barbados (or wherever you go!)
Good luck!
Kathryn
