D.C. Area Babies

Signed up for a Baby and Me swim class

I now have 2 weeks to:

-by DD a bathing suit, swim diapers, and "plastic pants"

-by myself a new bathing suit

-get a wax

-get over my body image issues.

No problem, right?  Wink

Re: Signed up for a Baby and Me swim class

  • How fun! I just started swim classes with DD in Alexandria about 3 weeks ago--it is TOO cute. If it makes you feel any better, I kind of dissociate when I get into my bathing suit and in the water. It's clear all the moms are focusing exclusively on the babies to get past the "holy crap, I'm in a swimsuit right now?!" At least, I do. :-) I saw one mom rocking a two piece last week and I was definitely impressed with her confidence.

  • I want to do that! Where is it? How old do the babies have to be? I think my DS is probably too young but I'd love to do this in the future.

  • BabyHatch - I'm glad you hear you love your class! I'm hoping you're right - everyone will be so focused on the babies that the moms are barely noticable (unless they're rocking 2 pieces!). Where did you find "plastic pants?"

Useonfire - it's through Fairfax County at Spring Hill Rec Center. The minimum age is 6 months, so your DS just barely misses the cutoff. There is another class starting in May, though. Falls Church City might have something also. I'll let you know how it goes!

  • Our class is not until April - I am dreading the bathing suit issue!  I hope the weather warms up enough before then so I can get outside and get walking!

Where in alexandria are you taking the classes at?

  • Cool I think I'll sign up in May when he's 7 months!

  • I also signed up for Baby and me swim class but the one in Lee District.  DD has a bathing suit but no swim diapers or plastic pants.  I don't even want to focus on the fact that I'll be in a bathing suit. Embarrassed

  • I signed up as well but at the Cub Run Rec center. I am so dreading the bathing suit especially since I inhaled half a box of Thin Mints today. I just found out today SPANX makes bathing suits but are so $$$$$.

Oh and what they hell are plastic pants anyways????

  • I'm signed up for Lee District too--starting on May 13th...

The Lee District pool website doesn't mention the plastic pants, just the swim diaper under the swim suit so I'm thinking I might pretend I didn't see the plastic pants part.

Do you think we need swim caps? Where does one buy a swim cap?

eta: I got a bathing suit from the Overstock section of the Lands' End website--it fits my breast feeding chest size AND has camouflaging rouching. At least I'm pretending it's camouflaging!

Seriously, the babies are too cute for words. Most of them love the water! Confession, I use a swim diaper and a bathing suit that is lined with plastic-like material. I didn't spring for individual plastic pants but I think it's ok. No accidents from any of the babies yet. ;-)

We do go to Chinquapin Rec Center (https://alexandriava.gov/recreation/info/default.aspx?id=12352) which is right next to TC Williams on King Street. This session runs until the first weekend in April (the 3rd or 4th) and there's another one that starts the following weekend. There are sessions at 9:30 and 10, each for 30 minutes.

  • We have gone to Ida Lee out in Leesburg. Quite honestly, the moms (and dads) are mostly concerned with making sure the baby is okay versus checking themselves out. I had the same concern but once I was in the water paying attention to the instructor, I forgot about it.

  • We are signed up for the swim class staring in a few weeks at Mt Vernon Rec center and I can't wait! I had the same concern about wearing a bathing suit but feel better after these posts.

  • We are taking the classes at Chinquapin starting in April, but on Saturdays.  :)  Should be fun!  DH is going to take LO though so I get a bit of mommy time.
