Happiest Baby on the Block

Has any one read this?  I bought it last night.  I couldn't decide between this or Baby Wise so I'm going to start with it and see how it goes.

Re: Happiest Baby on the Block

  • uhh...NO BABY WISE!!!! no. just no.If you google baby wise you will get a TON of articles on why it is NOT GOOD for the baby.

Happiest Baby on the Block is a MUST. Seriously it is a must read. It saved me several several times. There is also a video that you can purchase and it was great to see the techniques in action.

  • I watched the DVD of Happiest Baby on the Block, and I just finished reading Babywise... I think there's definitely a way to incorporate both theories!  There's nothing against holding, swaddling, swaying LO but still keeping them on the Babywise schedule.  Only time will tell, though. Smile

  • Happiest Baby is great. Please do not read Baby Wise.
  • I was at a wedding on Saturday. One friend we were sitting with said we HAVE to get Babywise, it's the best. Then, later we were talking to another friend and said (on their own - we didn't tell them about the other friend) that they read Babywise and didn't agree with it. I love getting all the conflicting advice! I guess we'll just read a few and do what's best for our lives and our baby - just like they did!

  • Good choice! I never really read it, but I have heard horrible things about baby wise..... stay away!!
  • happiest baby on the block DVD is on Netflix, too.
  • Thanks for all the feedback.  I love mixed reviews.  Stick out tongue  Looks like I'll be buying both and seeing what works for me and my LO.  Doesn't look like many people have anything bad to say about Happiest Baby though so I'm glad I started with it.

  • We watched the happiest baby on the block DVD and the techniques we're helpful imo.
  • HBOTB- I loved it.  There are great things in it that worked VERY well for us and DD.  I highly recommend it!!

  • I'm reading Babywise right now (recommended by 3 moms I know) and I will read Happiest Baby on the Block next.

  • Just one of the MILLIONS of articles out there on why babywise is bad. Just please educate yourself on why this method is so controversial and why so many Dr's are STRONGLY against it.

  • If you look at the Babywise reviews on Amazon, it's amazing!  There are HUNDREDS of 5-star reviews, and HUNDREDS of 1-star reviews, but very few in between.  So it seems like the kind of thing where you either believe in it or you don't.  The people who believe in it swear by it, and the people who are against it think it's the worst thing you can do to your child.  I'm in favor of educating myself about BOTH sides of the spectrum (Parent-directed feeding vs. Attachment Parenting), then deciding what works for me (which will most likely be some combination of both).

  • i don't know why anyone would ever tell you to not read a book. parenting books can be controversial. in the end you have to do what works best for you and your lo so i would say read everything you can get your hands on and then make an educated decision on what works best for your family.

  • the thing about babywise is, i think you'd have to be some cold, cold mama for the techniques to feel natural.  I mean, who on earth could NOT feed their infant when it's clearly hungry, just because it's not on "schedule?"  Or let in lie there all alone when it just needs a snuggle?  I just don't understand.  It is not possible to spoil an infant, and no matter what you say to the contrary, it will dictate your daily life.

Absolutely.  I don't know of anyone who is silly enough to follow the advice of any book EXACTLY.  You can understand the principles, and apply them to your child as needed.

I know many moms of multiples that loved Baby Wise, so I will read it.  I have friends who just had their first baby and recommeded the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD.  I have to say, they did one of the "methods" taught on the DVD at my house and I almost peed my pants laughing - but to each his own!

  • Happiest Baby on the Block saved dh and I when we were sleep deprived and at our wits end with dd. I think it's great and I am not an AP parent. I just think many of the idea work well to sooth a fussy baby.

  • Just another plug for Happiest Baby on the Block.  It just made so much sense and it really worked for my son.  I agree you have to figure out what works for your child but I've never seen anything bad or controversial about HBOTB.  Everyone raves about it.

This exactly.  Read all you can and make the most educated decisions for you and your family. My SIL swears by Babywise and is buying it for us.  I am happy to read it and see what it is all about.

  • We read Happiest Baby... and found the advice/techniques pretty useful, but we also didn't find them terribly insightful (pretty much the exact type of advice given by the nurses, packaged as a "method").  A friend gave us the book, I would have been irritated if I spent money on it.  I don't know anything about babywise.

  • For all you first time moms I will say that once the baby get's here you will find the best solution for you and baby. Reading as much as you can will educate you and give you options. There is no such thing as a one stop shop.

To be honest I used different techniques, for all different reasons, for different ages from about 4 to 5 books including HBOTB and BW, Ferber etc.

I also found that reading to much of this stuff while expecting was overwhelming. All the advice, methods, opinions and such was too much. You will have plenty of time and will probably absorb more when the baby is here since you will be in the experience and situation.

Thanks for letting us know this! You just saved DH and I a couple of bucks.

SO true, wait until the baby is here IMO. That said, HBOTB was awesome for us! I think it helped me as much as my DD when I was stressed with a screaming baby.

  • Happiest Baby on the Block helped us survive the first couple of months with a VERY colicky baby girl.   The next book that was super helpful was The Baby Whisperer. She's always been a great sleeper!
