Success after IF

Just made carrots for babyfood, not liking the constistency :/

...I guess I didn't steam them long enough but I was paranoid about them losing their nutrients in the process. I used the food processor instead of the Magic Bullet and the carrots came out mostly purreed but with LOTS of little bits in it. Since they aren't supposed to be introduced until 6 months, I guess I'm not too worried about it but did anyone else get the same result?

  • are the chunks hard?  If not maybe you need to puree it longer to get those out.  Otherwise you can also always strain out the pieces.

  • hurray for making your own babyfood -- it's the best!

an fyi, you should not store homemade food in the freezer for more than a couple of week (3 weeks at the most.) storing carrots for 2 months is no good.

when ginny was eating purees I would put one afternoon aside a week and cook up a bunch of veggies for just that week. easy breezy.

  • I made carrots however it was that wholesomebabyfood.com told me to because of the nitrates. I remember that they got really mushy and they were a nice puree.... not as thin as Gerber or something, but they had no problem eating them.
  • Roaringrock is correct that you're not supposed to freeze baby food for more than a couple weeks. And if you're making carrots you should never use the water they're steamed in to thin them out like you do or can with other veggies and fruits.

I'm looking forward to doing all this, too!

ETA: Well, I just re-read my own source and I'm wrong! It says up to three months. I swear I read 2-3 weeks there before, but I guess I was smoking crack!

it's not going to hurt the baby to eat food that has been frozen for 3 months it's just not going to be as good (tasting or nutritionally.) fresh is always best!

and another thing, never freeze defrosted veggies. for example, don't cook up a bunch of frozen peas and then freeze again.

  • Oh wow, I've been using the wholesomebabyfoods website alot and it says 3 months max, which is why I have started making them now. I did use organic carrots though, doesn't that mean it has no nitrates?

  • WTH? I just made DD's 1st puree out of organic baby carrots. I have a book that said it was a good first food. Geesh! It's always something isn't it? I'm hoping because it was organic it doesn't contain nitrates? Ugh

  • OK, I just read the article about nitrates and I feel better. It also says not to serve them to babies under 3 months of age. It says the odds of baby getting nitrate poisoning from carrots is zero. Phew!
