3rd Trimester

XP: Let's play: Rate my crazy meter!!

I never know where to post, so this is on 12-24 too.  Sorry about that if you frequent both boards.

Backstory:  My cats like to eat snow/dirt off of the shoes of my kids that come to piano lessons (20 a week).  So, even though they're inside cats they ingest soil from outside all the time--which is a source for contracting toxo. Grrrrr.

I left the room (and my water) for a minute, came back and finished it before I realized there was water everywhere--and my cat was smacking its gums.  It had obviously enjoyed my water.

My OB says the risk is low, and doesn't want to do a blood test b/c even if it's negative then I'll worry the rest of the pg about contracting it. I think if it comes back neg, I'll feel better but no go.

Would you worry about this?  Or is this another pg thing I am blowing out of proportion? That happens a lot to me, btw.  So...be my crazy meter!

  • I'm certainly not going to call you crazy.  BUT, if it were me, I wouldn't have even made the connection between a cat near my water and any potential risk to me or my unborn.  If this was a regular occurence (which it's clearly not), I think your concerns might be more warranted.  But for now, I'd say let it go.

  • I wouldn't have thought twice about it...but maybe that makes me the crazy one? ;)
  • From what my OB told me, if you have been around cats for an extended period of time you have probably built up an immunity to toxo already. But if it will make you feel better to get tested, then go ahead it isnt going to hurt anything.

This is what I was thinking

  • If you know it'll make you feel better, I'd push for the test.  I'm sure the doc is right that the risk is small, but it's still there.  Then once it's negative, I guess you can't leave your drinks within their reach so you'll make sure not to share water with your cats again. Smile

  • I never leave my drinks unattended in my house for this very reason! One cat loves to stick her paw into whatever I'm drinking if I'm not paying attention. So if you're crazy, I am too, because I worry about the same thing.
