2nd Trimester

non baby related random question.....

ok, so I have been trying to decide what I want to do with my life once LO gets here and I decide to go back to work...I just want to work part time........I have a degree in History and my plan was always to teach, but there are absoulty no teaching jobs around here, actually they are letting a lot go....so thats out.....but I am also a licensed esthetician (skin therapist) and I have been thinking about opening my own skin care business......where I do facials, massage, body treatments...but my question is, should I do it out of my home or rent out a space?

I would do it out of my home because we live in a great location for it, I am about 2 blocks from our towns "downtown" and I could have a full studio upstairs (where there is currently nothing...3 rooms and a bathroom but nothing in it) where no one would even have to walk through my house.....

doing it at home and not paying rent somewhere I could keep my prices pretty low, which I think would more allow people to beable to come with this economy...like hour facials for 40 dollars, hour massage for 40 dollars, peels for 55 dollars...I know people do massage and hair out of thier houses..but would you come to someones at home studio for a facial or massage?

Re: non baby related random question.....

  • I'm a hairstylist and I rent a chair out of a salon now.  This is what I would do.  I would go to a well known salon or spa part time to start out.  Then open your home one and hopefully you can take clients with you.  Its hard to start out doing spa services out of your home. First off people don't know you or where you are located. Its nice to have a spa name behind you at first.  I'm hoping in the future to do hair out of my home, but I'm not comfortable enough yet with my clientelle to take that leap.

  • I used to rent a chair at a salon and now I do hair out of my home from time to time for my 'regulars'. I primarily do hair extensions and cut/color because I just don't have time for waxes, mani's pedi's etc now that I work full time. If you happen to do hair or make-up as well you can market yourself on Modelmayhem.com, I've gotten alot of gig's for music video's and runway shows from that site. I would highly suggest starting at a salon to gain clientele, unless you planned on investing alot into advertising. Also what you could do it set up a nice sign in your yard and a box of pamphlets about your services and prices with a number that people could call to set up an appointment.
