How to remove ink stains from clothes?

DH left a pen in his pants pocket that I didn't notice and it got all over three of his nice dress pants for work and two of his dress shirts! Ugh, I could kill him... but that's besides the point. Is there any hope of getting the stains out? I googled and it said rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover, but won't those take the color out of the clothes? Anyone try either of these (or another solution) and have it work without taking the color out of the clothes? TIA!

Re: How to remove ink stains from clothes?

  • I've had success with those Tide 2 Go pens on ink on my couch, but it was just a few scribble marks, not huge blotches.

  • I know hairspray takes ink pen off plastic (like dolls faces), but not sure about clothes. . .

  • Hairspray!! Spray it directly on the stains and rub it in with your fingers. I would let it sit for a while before you wash it so that the stain can lift. This has worked several times for me. You may have to try it a few times but it should work. Baby wipes have taken pen off of my couch. Good luck!
  • I have heard about hairspray taking out ink stains.  Maybe let that sit and soak before washing?
  • Goo Gone will work too if you have any of that. DS1 broke an ink pen open and it went alllllll over his shirt (long story). Goo Gone got out about 95% of it.
  • Yes, hairspray!  But you need to use the old school Aquanet type stuff.
  • Well, I tried the hairspray and while it started to get some of it out, it nowhere near got it all. I'm going to soak it in hot water with oxy clean then try it again later if need be. Hopefully, it works or this will become an expensive day! Ugh.

  • Rubbing alcohol works, and it won't take the color out of the pants. I have used it (or hand sanitizer) on my carpet before with great results.
