everything the boys use during the day (straw cups, bottles, plates, spoons, whatever), we hand wash every night. We take turns. We didn't feel like the dishwasher got it clean enough and left spots. So one of us does the baby dishes while the other one picks up toys.
I rinse everything out by hand and use a washcloth and dishsoap if necessary, and then throw them in the dishwasher. I'm not confident in our dishwasher's ability to get food bits off of dishes, but I like the sterilizing aspect of using a dishwasher. After the dishwasher, I dry everything as good as I can with a towel and then let all the pieces airdry overnight or for several hours. I hate the thought of mold or something growing in the gaskets, so I may be a little OCD about it. DH thinks I "overthink" washing sippies and bottles and will just throw everything in the cabinet, wet or not (ewww). Sometimes I think he does it just to see if I'll notice. I always do!
To clarify, I never washed bottles in the dishwasher, just sippies. I used the microwave sterilizer thing for bottles/nipples/pump parts and then did the same hand-drying and airdry routine.
We had some friends say they got rid of sippies quickly because they kept molding. Yuck! They are not very clean people, but at the same time, I don't think sippy cups are hard to clean and have never had a mold problem with them. These are also friends that we don't like to visit their house though because it's kind of gross. If they want to get together, we offer our house...
Hey, I suggest getting a set of sippy straw cleaning brushes from the Sippy Stuff website @ sippystuff.com. They work wonders. They also have a really good spout and lid brush there too. I ordered the entire set here but you have the choice to get them separately.
Re: clicky poll- washing sippy cups.
