Upstate NY Babies

Tell me what you think...

about home birth.  I have a client who was supposed to deliver at the hospital but has now decided to deliver at home.  I have mixed feelings about it, so I want to know what you all think.

  • Never.

I'm sure she has her reasons and I wish her luck but personally I just don't understand. All the "what ifs"...and all the mess! Totally not my style.

  • I honestly don't know why you would want to. I tend to think medicine and practices have evolved to provide for a safer birth for both the baby and the mother. I bet a hundred years ago, heck even 20 years ago, people would have given anything to have the advances we have now. Even if the mother doesn't want to utilize them - they are there for emergencies.

And like Mrs White said - UGH the mess! After the c/s I GUSHED a gallon of blood every time I stood up for days...a red-stained rug would totally clash with my decor at home.

  • xkimx is having one so you can page her

It's not for me.  Give me the drugs and modern medicine.  I don't want Ethan there he can see the miracle of birth when he has his own kids someday.

  • I can understand wanting to be in a relaxed homey atmosphere but a home birth no way. I think you can achieve the atmosphere you want in the hospital or even birthing center if you pick the right facility.

Plus the what if's and the mess rule it out for me.

All I wanted to do was shower after giving birth to wash away the funk. If I gave birth at home believe it or not, I would want to clean the mess so quick and cleaning is really the last thing a person should want to do after birth.

  • It's not for me. I understand why some people choose to have a home-birth but I wouldn't. ?There are too many what-ifs that I worry about...
  • Yup, I am planning one after a lot of research & thought.

There are no birthing centers in the Buffalo area and I don't want to deliver in a hospital again. I will have a MW attending, along with her assistant. I am very excited!

  • Not for me personally.  I had too much too worry about with my gestational hypertension, his position, etc, and I felt much better that him and I were sonstantly monitored.  My DH has delivered two babies, but I think that it would be a WHOLE different ballgame, if I wanted to deliver at home.

Did you have a bad hospital experience?

Not terrible, but not great. My water broke so I was put on their time clock which put unneeded stress on me. I had some terrible residents & ignorant nurses. They were supposed to leave C in my room at all times, but whisked him away to the nursery which was short staffed (& fought on letting DH stay with him- there was nothing wrong with C at all) so I sat alone in a room for 3 hours completely by myself. Got yelled at for walking around with him.

Lots of little stuff. I know I will be more comfortable at home.

  • I have actually thought about a home birth.  I wouldn't want to do it for my first, because I would like to have experienced one in a hospital before I decided to do a home birth.  It also would depend on my health and the baby's health.  If there were any issues I wouldn't do it.  I do see how you would be much more confortable at home.  I wouldn't do it unassisted.  I would want a midwife there to assist.  Again, it is just a thought that I have done a tiny bit of research on.  It isn't in the for-front of my mind though.

  • I can see where some would find it appealing. The comforts of home definitely could reduce the stress of giving birth. However, the idea of the unknown terrifies me. Anything can happen during or after a birth, and I would feel so much better knowing that help is just inches away. Also, it is a very messy process, and I just would not want to worry about cleaning up my house after all that. Petty, maybe, but true.
  • I don't think it's something I've even thought about because of the mess and the what-if's. But at the same time, I haven't looked into it at all, so there might be some merits or super ninja ways of getting rid of all the mess (cover your entire room with a tarp?, give birth in your bathtub?).

At the same time, it is important to do this thing in an environment that you are comfortable in - where you know that those in charge share your values and/or respect your wishes. I guess in your home, you are in total control of that. For some women the control factor may outweigh all the cons of homebirth.
