We had our anatomy ultrasound yesterday- add us to team blue! The doctor did notice a cyst on the brain (which I have heard positive outcomes from) but also a shadow on the heart.
What we were told is that alone either one wouldn't raise serious concerns, but together they can be "soft markers" for genetic concerns. We are being referred for a specialized ultrasound at the Mayo Clinic next week.
Just wondering if anyone has had both of these concerns and if so what was the outcome. Thanks for your T&P- it will be a long week!
(And yes- I know that I am on Special Needs and that will affect the answers I get here- I am posting on other boards as well- just looking for as much info as possible!- Thanks!)

Re: XP: From 2nd Trimester
Our 20 week ultrasound showed a choroid plexus cyst but they didn't tell us about it. We cheated and read the results before we handed the paper to our OB. We had also done CVS so we felt confident that there were no genetic issues with our baby. The dr probably felt the same because we were not told of the cyst and most of the time these go away before 32 weeks. We had other ultrasounds and we assumed the cyst went away since no one mentioned it again. There was no cyst when he was born, but he did have issues with one of the structures in his brain that we were told was unrelated to the choroid plexus cyst. He has Partial Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum. The Corpus Callosum sits above the choroid plexus areas in the brain.
Nathaniel does have genetic issues that were not detectable via CVS. He has some intersitial deletions on Chromosome #1. This is what affected his brain development.
In NICU they also saw a "cardiothalmic silhouette" or a shadow on the heart that they thought was something wrong with his aorta. It turns out is was just a shadow cast onto the heart from the thaymus gland, located near the heart, which is enlarged in newborns. He did have a very large PDA which did close when he was about 4 days old.
Good Luck on your followup ultrasound! I hope that nothing is found.
I do not post here much but wanted to let you my son showed a choroid plexus cyst also during our ultrasound. That was the only thing they noticed though so our doctor told us but didn't make a big deal out of it. He mentioned it would probably resolve on its own. Fast forward to delivery day. Once he was born they did an ultrasound of his brain and determined the cyst was still there but they were unable to get measurements ect. At about a month old we did an MRI to determine placement and size of the cyst. After his MRI they classified his cyst as an arachnoid cyst and we were referred to a different doctor. His cyst was pretty large in comparison to his head growth so we kept track of head circumference and did a few more MRI scans over the last 17 months to monitor.
During this time DS kept meeting all of his devolopemental milestones and really progressing well. At his 1 year check up they decided that his cyst was putting a lot of pressure on his left ventricle so we decided he needed surgery. We were thankful they did an endoscopic fenstration, which is esentially putting a hole in the cyst to let it drain and be absorbed by the other fluid around the brain.
We are going on 6 weeks since surgery and our son is doing great. We have our follow up appointment this week actually. He is doing very well and you wouldn't have even known he had surgery a little over a month ago. I hope the very best for your little guy. Congrats on team blue!
