How often do you use the aspirator/"boogie sucker"?

DS sounded extra congested this morning so I used it on him and got a decent sized boogie out of one side. Makes me wonder if I should be doing it more to keep him cleaned out. Also, TMI but the boogied were greenish. I know this can be a sign of infection in adults. Are green baby boogies ok?

  • I use it about once a week.  I just try to clear his nose out when it sounds like he's snoring or sometimes I can see them.  Not sure about the green boogies though.  If baby had a fever or any other signs of being sick, I would correlate the boogies with an infection, but it no other signs, it's probably not a big deal.

  • Pretty much daily, whenever I hear her breathing a little weird. We added a humidifier and upgraded our air filter last night, I'm hoping that helps. ETA: it's always green but it's always dry, too.
  • I only use it if I see boogies.... if she was congested I would put in saline drops then use it but she's been pretty clear so far.

  • I have a dumb question.  Are some of the aspirators better than others?

I have attempted to use it several times when I see monsters hanging out in LOs nose.  It has never pulled anything out.

Am I just using it wrong? I should note that I squeeze it prior to putting it in his nose so that it doesn't blow them further up. GAWD I am loser for not knowing how to use something so simple.

  • It usually ends up being several times a day since DD spits up A LOT through her nose. I try to suction her nose out each time this happens.

  • A couple times a day since he's been sick.  Sometimes he wakes himself up not being able to breathe and I have to suck out his nose and his mouth.  Poor little guy :(

Yes, there are some that don't work well.  I found the one from the hospital works best.  The key is to do it quickly - just like you said, squeeze it before you put it in LO's nose, and then just let go, to let it suck it right out.  I remember it took me a while with dd#1 to get used to doing it.  And I had to use it on ds last night, and it took me a few tries before I remembered how to do it right, and got a big boogie out!  :)  Good luck!
