Babies: 0 - 3 Months

1 month old sleep- grunts and squirms

sometimes my newborn sleeps extremely quietly and other times, especially at night- he squirms and makes lots of sounds but every time I check he eyes would be closed (he would quiet down for maybe a minute a start again, but it doesn't escalate into waking up or crying). When it does escalate, I know he is hungry. Anyone else have similar experience?

thank you

  • Babies are loud wiggly sleepers.  Unless you are trying to do a dream feed (I don't know much about that) I wait until LO actually lets out a little cry.

Babies have really short sleep cycles and when they come back up to the top of the cycle they are easier to wake up and they may startle themselves awake.  Do you swaddle for sleep?  Once I started swaddling for sleep I started getting 5-7 hours at a crack.  My LO will let out at least one little cry before I pick her up to go bf her.

  • opps, your actual question was about LO being hungry and when to pick up to feed....a healthy baby won't starve themselves so I still go with a real cry before picking up otherwise it can just be LO was dreaming or something.

  • We were grunty and squirmy pre-swaddling. She is doing it right now and I noticed she worked an arm loose. I'll fix it after she hits herself in the face and wakes up mad... And ready to eat.

LoL, that made me laugh.  I finally got up with Ophelia this morning because she was making so many wiggly grunty sounds I slept poorly for an hour then she cried out and I realized she had an arm out.  Probably bopped herself in the nose.

  • DD tends to do this more for naps since I don't swaddle her during the day. She does this thing where she let's out a high pitch squeek just like a mouse in her sleep - it's adorable.
