Changing pad cover question.

I was wondering since changing pads are already waterproof, wouldn't it be easier not to have a cover on it that you have to wash all the time cause it probably gets pretty messy with all the changing of diapers? With just the pad, you just have to wipe off the mess with a wipe, right?  I'm really hesitant to get a cover.  I guess it would be more comfortable for LO to lay on, but other then that, I don't quite see a purpose for them other then making them look pretty in the baby's room. Tell me if I'm wrong.  If any of you have an opinion on this subject, I would love to hear it!

    I have a change mat with a soft padded fabric side and a waterproof backing.

    I also use it as a play mat for LO.

    I generally always have a cloth fabric nappy on it to catch any vomit or bottom spills. It's easier to just throw nappies in the wash. 

    If it soaks through then I clean the mat.

    When it's in the wash I use the plastic change mat that came with our diaper bag. But I also cover that with a cloth nappy when I use it. Mostly because it just feels horrible and I sometimes leave LO to kick her legs around and have naked time on it, so it feels weird having her on a plastic mat.

    I sometimes think the same thing bc we change our LOs directly on the pad when the cover is in the wash. The main reason we keep using it though is that the pad is cold against their bodies esp in the middle of the night. The cover just makes it a little more comfy. Plus it looks better in the room than the naked mat.

    oh that's true about it being cold, cause it is plastic.  Well, I guess I'll be getting some changing pad covers then.  I want my LO to be comfortable when being changed. (what was I thinking?)  Anyway I saw a really cute one at BRU the other day!  It had tiny pink/purple/yellow flowers all over it.  I'm getting that one!  Thanks for the input!!

    I have a few really pretty and soft covers that I used for the first week.  Once he pooped all over it, it was all over.  Instead of using the covers (that are a tad bit annoying to get on and off), I just throw a receiving blanket down before I place LO on it.  It's much easier.

    I use a changing pad cover then put down a waterproff mat.  I only have to change the pad cover if she spits up really badly.  Little spits dry quickly and I change the pad weekly at least.

    Our changing pad cover is great! DD has a tendency to pee all over the table, and the pad soaks it up. If we didn;t have one, we'd be chasing a pool of pee around with a cloth. The cover looks good, is soft and comfy and practical. We own several.

    I've had DD start peeing mid-diaper change several times. Without the cover, the pee would run all over the pad resulting in a pee covered baby. At least with the cover on, it tends to soak through all in one spot. I generally change it once a week unless she has an "accident" on it.

    thank you so much ladies! This has been so helpful even though it's a little thing like a changing pad cover, it was just so hard for me to figure out if I really needed one or not.

    DS pees all over the table (and himself) quite often.  We cover the table (we use the one from the PNP for now, but did the same with a regular freestanding changing pad as well) with "chucks" pads...which can be found at CVS or Rite Aid and sold as Disposable Underpads.   They come like 36 or so in a pack and are around 6/7 dollars.  When DS has an accident or the pad becomes dirty we just toss it and put on a new one.
