Babies: 3 - 6 Months

my 5 month old is constipated :(

Any tips on how to help him poop better? He's straining so bad and whines and cries a few times because it's painful. I've started putting vaseline in his rectum with a qtip very gently and not deep, and my friend told me to try a little more than measured water in his formula, it might be too thick when he's constipated. I emailed my pedi and he said that oatmeal for breakfast helps from the fiber but he's not on solids yet. Also mineral oil was good. His tummy is bloated and has firm poop :( He already bled a little when I wiped him clean and we took him to urgent care asap and they said it was because he was constipated and his first time truly pushing hard :( ANY help would be great ladies! tia

  • DD is a little constipated right now too.  Screaming, arching her back and grunting/straining.  I checked her temp rectally today to try and help things along and she pooped right after that.  Not much though, considering she haden't pooped since yesterday morning.  We are feeding DD solids once a day so I tried prunes tonight.  She's had them before and liked them but she wasn't interested tonight.  I'll try the oatmeal for breakfast though!  I'll probably check her temp rectally again tomorrow if she's still really straining like she was today.

  • We gave DD a couple spoonfuls of pear juice before each feeding for 2 days.  Major poop explosion at the end of Day 2!

  • We had a few days with no poops and he seemed really uncomfortable...My pedi told us to try 1/2 ounce of prune juice to 1/2 oz breast milk or formula..we tried that twice and then I gave him 1/2 a suppository (infant glycerine supp) and 10 minutes later he had a big poop! He seemed to feel much better

  • Daily prune juice has been great for LO.  It's sweet, and babies are the only people around who don't hear "prunes" and wrinkle up their nose.
  • We give DD a little bit of diluted pear juice everyday and it seems to help with constipation.

  • thanks everyone, I'll try the prune juice if the pedialite doesn't help. I put an ounce of it in his 5 oz of formula tonight so we'll see if it makes any difference.

I thought Pedialyte was to replace lost nutrients from diarrhea and vomiting? I could be wrong.
My pedi said a little baby apple juice would help things move along! I've had to almost try it a couple times but right before I do, the poop fairy always visits!
