BFers: both sides at night?

During the day, LO eats on one breast, then will play for 30-40 min or so, then feeds on the other breast and will fall asleep either nursing or right after in her swing or in my arms.

During the night, I feed her on the first breast, but she usually falls asleep by the time she's done on that side. I do a diaper change to wake her up and then feed from the other breast, but then she's wide awake and won't go back down for over an hour. However, if I just feed from just one breast, I'm afraid she get enough to eat and be up an hour later.

What do you do during the night?

Re: BFers: both sides at night?

  • Typically, she sleeps from 10-ish to 3 or 4. At that first waking, she really only needs a few minutes on one breast and then she's right back out. At her second waking (6 or 7), she takes both and eats for a longer period of time.

I'd say if your DD falls asleep after one, I'd just put her right back to bed. She'll get up when she's hungry again!

  • I feed from only one side, and pump the other side to build a freezer stash.  DS will sleep 3 - 4 hours after feeding from just one side.  I tried to feed from both sides at night to see if he would sleep longer, and found that he would sleep the same amount of time, so now I don't bother trying to push the other side.

  • my LO is only 2 weeks old and I do pretty much whatever he wants... Sometimes it's one breast, sometimes it's both..and most of the time I'll have to do a diaper change which wakes him up (and that sucks!) or he'll fall asleep and wake up 1/2 hour later for a diaper change... Agh, the life of a breastfeeding mom!
  • Now what I do is change her diaper first if it needs it then feed her from the first breast then I reswaddle her and feed her off the second 'till she's nodding.  I take her and put her back in the bassinet after that.

  • I'm currently nursing my 3rd child and have always only done one side during the night.
