NIFR: Need teacherly help again

Again with the lesson plans for this week: topic is Drugs/Medicine

For the 7th grade, the lessons in the book go like this:

  •  using drugs
  • use of drugs and medicine
  • drug misuse and abuse
  • drug addiction
  • consequences of drug abuse
  • stimulants and depressants
  • marijuana
  • hallucinogens/inhalants
  • staying drug free

For the 8th grade, I think i already decided that i'm doing the lessons on what are drugs and drug abuse and addiction.

I'm stuck on the 7th grade though... any suggestions? I'm also interested in activities that I can do with them (both grades).

All suggestions welcome! Thanks.

  • it went reallly well, thanks for asking. I posted an update the next day!

A little more info, after a question from someone on another board:

My cooperating teacher doesn't expect much from me (she wants me to make this as easy as possible on  myself), but i'm being observed this week by my advisor, and it's only my second class teaching, so i'm kind of freaked out.

I don't have to do all of the lessons - i get 1 50 minute period to cover whatever I can, so my plan is pretty much to do the best lesson I can in the limited amount of time I have.

  •  I've been trying to find a  video clip that I like to show during the lesson - but most of the crap out there is all about the "dont do drugs" blabhalbhalbh....

I just found this clip - which is pretty cool (I think, but i"m 34). It shows mugshots, before and after drugs use... is this appropriate for 13-14 year olds?

Hey- I think that clip is appropriate.  Nothing too graphic and the pics really do say it all. ( just be prepared you may get some giggles from one of the poor ladies at the end ( crazy hair).  I have spent way too long with that age group and sometimes wonder if my maturity level has suffered  ;)

Can you do the same for 7th? Here are my thoughts/ questions.  What goes into the lesson : what are drugs?  Is it like an overview of drugs or does it raise awareness about drugs kids may not ordinarily think of as drugs/dangerous.  I guess I am thinking prescription drug abuse or things along those lines.  If so, there could be benefit in raising awareness with the 7th graders because some of them may not understand that this type of abuse is just as "risky" of behavior.

As long is it is okay to do so, I might go with the same topics for both grade levels.

This is my plan - i will just tweak the lesson a little bit for the 8th grade - but I'm running into a problem where I need an activity for the lesson and I can't find one anywhere.

I'm probably doing this back asswards, but I'm not a teacher, and this is the only way I know how to do this. I find the activity I want to do, and I build the rest of the lesson around the activity. That's what I did with the straws activity for the smoking, and the activity I have for next week (alcohol ) is awesome.

But this week is giving me fits. Until I find an activity, I have no leg to stand on.

  • Hmmmmm. I don't have a ton of knowledge on the subject which makes it hard to come up with an activity.

But, I'd love to try and help.  What are some of the things you are going to be teaching them- like specifically?  What are the objectives of the lesson?  If I know some of this, I am hoping I can help you come up with some activities.

FWIW, I think is is CRAZY that they expect you to be able to do all of this w/o any education courses!  If pep talks help... I am impressed with what you have done and think you are doing a great job! :)

  • I am going to log off for the night, but feel free to email me anything that you think would be helpful and I can try to play around/brainstorm some activities if you'd like! :)

we had one class? Isn't that enough? Hmm

I've been crying on and off for the better part of an hour - it's really not that impressive.

  • There are these goggles I use in teaching psych that are goggles like you use for science, but they're painted green (opaque). Then they cut a small hole in it and put a prism through it so that your vision is distorted.  We call them "drunk goggles" b/c it simulates visual impairment.  Maybe you coudl make something like that?  It's a hit with my HS juniors and seniors, and the activity could just be age appropriate (I ahve mine throw a ball--it's consistently off)

Beware that youtube is probably blocked at the school if you plan on streaming it through the school.  There are some work arounds if you need it.  Learner.org has great videos you can stream.  The level may be WAY too advanced, though. Check it first.

I know the sensation and perception part here started with a psychologist demonstrating the drunk goggles w/ a  quarter back:

#22, 29 and 30 here might be helpful (on depressants, addiction, etc):

  • schoolsout - i love the "drunk goggles". I'm using them next week for a lesson on alcohol! I have sunglasses "painted" with glue and heavy work gloves, and they have to screw nuts onto bolts. It's fun.

And my DH can download the you tube videos on to my flashdrive, so I don't have to stream them... i don't know what I would do if he couldn't do that - he's done it 3x for me so far!

I think i found something. It's not nearly as good as I would want it to be - but at this point, i'm going to stop being picky - and just write a lesson. Is it bad that i'm past the point of caring, and I just want to get this done?
