We got a much, much better deal at the Chevy Dealership. The same vehicle, same year, similar miles, etc. for $4,500 less. Carmax tried to tell me I would get the best deal there because they were giving me a TT&L credit along with my trade-in. Not true because the Chevy dealership got the price of the vehicle so close to my trade-in value that I only paid about $18 in tax there anyway! My whole experience at the Chevy dealership was much better too. We spent almost a full day at Carmax just getting the trade value, with Rhett, very pregnant, etc. I was miserable. In 15 minutes at the other place I had gotten my trade value and negotiated the price of the vehicle down - no exaggeration. I told my sales guy it was by far my least painful vehicle buying experience ever!
Oops, I really did have something positive to say! Carmax will pull a vehicle from anywhere in the state and they were willing to have it brought to S. Austin for free, with no obligation to buy, so it does give you access to a larger pool of vehicles.

LOVE Carmax. I've sold them 3 or 4 vehicles now and purchased 3 times. I've always gotten the best experience and deal there. They are NO pressure and will let you test drive practically all day. The only bad experience I had was a strange sound my "new" car made but we got that fixed and it wasn't their fault, it was Saab's.
My most recent car was $400 less expensive somewhere else but I hate to haggle. It gives me knots in my stomach. My other cars were both ~$1,000 less each.
I have never bought a car from them, only sold them our last car when my husband got a company car. I personally think you would get a better deal from a dealership only b/c you can't haggle with Carmax.

I looked there but for the same car, I could get it cheaper elsewhere. They are super easy though - so if it's worth it to you to have a very easy deal w/ zero haggling - then they're great. Otherwise - I'd look around. Try autotrader.com. All the dealers put their used cars on there so you can start to get an idea of prices, etc w/o driving around.
