Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If your newborn STTN

How long did it last? Simon is a week and a half, he sleeps from 12am-ish to about 5am, then eats and goes back to sleep for another four-ish hours. We are enjoying the rest while we can, but wondering when this will change.

Wishful thinking: maybe it won't change?!

  • We were told to wake him at least every 3 hours to eat so unfortunately not too long for us. But the pedi said once he was 10lbs he could sleep until  he wakes up to eat. And for the most part now he usually does a stretch at night that is 4-6 hours (I like it better when he is closer to 6 hrs!). Then he eats and goes back to sleep for usually 3.5 hrs. So don't give up hope that it will continue!

    This.

  • We had to wake DS up every two hours to eat because he lost so much weight. He's gained it all back though so now pedi says to just let him sleep until he wakes up. He usually gives us a 3 hour stretch and then two 2 hour stretches at night.

If he's sleeping that long and weight isn't a concern, just enjoy it! You never know- a friend's newborn (who was almost 10 pounds at birth) STTN at three weeks and never woke up all night long.

  • That is too young to STTN.  They NEED to wake up to eat at this age.

Maybe STTN was too strong of a phrase. He DOES wake up to eat, he just goes right back to sleep. He went to the pedi last week and he was back up to birth weight (9lbs 3oz), and that was at 6 days old. I have never considered that I should be waking him.

  • rule of thumb--never wake a sleeping baby,

It may not change, every baby is different, and its your choice to wake and feed.  Personally I think that is great he is sleeping for you,  my DD's both slept longer at night, usually 10p-6a,  similar to our schedule.
  • DO NOT WAKE..why? unless the baby is underweight and not gaining I can't see why you would wake..

My LO has been sleeping through the night since birth..usually 11-7 or 10-6..varies but stays asleep...

My doctor said never to wake baby to eat when they want to eat they will let you know...

He eats 4-5 oz every 4 hours when he is awake...he usually stays awake all day except for a nap in the afternoon like at this time for anywhere from 2-3 hours

He has already grown 2 inches as of 3 weeks..and gained a pound passed his birth weight..he was past his birth weight at one week

  • my lo came home from the hosapital sleeping 5-6 hour streches at night...now she goes anywhere from 7-9 hours. We are so thankful!
