Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you moved or are moving with a toddler..

how are you doing the packing? DH and I are planning to pack during naps and bed time. I don't know that that's the best for DS though. It's easier for us, but I don't want to shock DS too much when he wakes up and a bunch of stuff is missing or moved.

  • I think that we just packed whenever we could.  I think that most of it was after bedtime.  DS didn't seem that shocked.  The morning of the actual move, my parents came down and took DS out to breakfast so that he wasn't in the way.

  • I had my mother and aunt come over to help us pack while DD was sleeping.

  • My parents are coming to help us pack a couple of days before the truck comes.  I just want to get it over with as quickly as possible.  I'll probably try to keep her out of the house while they pack.  We're going to pack her room last, and I'm going to bring a lot of her toys and books with me in the car.  I'm actually more worried about how long it'll take her to get used to the new place.
  • We moved when the boys were a year old - closed on their birthday!  For the most part, we kept their stuff until last to pack.  Packed up the office and TV room and our bedroom - places they didn't go anyway.  Kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, etc. That way, you'll be almost done with the stuff and can throw their stuff in last.

As long as their stuff and routine/schedule don't vary too much, you'll be ok!

  • I packed continuously through the days whether she was awake or not. Things she couldn't break, she helped me pack. She thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.

She also colored on the boxes & i let her shove paper around stuff

this is a big concern of mine as well. We're going from an apartment to a townhome and he'll be in his own room.

  • When we moved from our apt, we hired the movers to pack.  I did my important things at night after dd went to sleep.
  • We packed in stages, but left his room mainly untouched for him.  However, most of his toys were already in bins/tubs, so they were moveable that way.  Then during one weekday when he was at daycare we had movers come and get all his stuff and all our big stuff and we moved that first.  We set up his new room first, picked him up from daycare, and brought him there.  We had shown him the new house and his new room beforehand and had talked to him about it a lot, though.

In our case, it wasn't too bad since we moved locally (from an apt. to a house) and had our apt. lease for awhile after we closed on the house, so we could do it gradually.

  • We moved when DS was 12 months.

We packed while he was awake. He would run around, play with the boxes and hand us newspaper. We also packed while he was asleep. His room was the last room we packed.
