Babies: 9 - 12 Months

s/o pears (re: baby poop... maybe TMI)

I thought they were supposed to act as laxatives, not make babies constipated?

Joshua started pears 3 days ago, and he has only had one tiny poop since then.

Should I stop giving them to him or try something else to help him poop?

ETA: since starting solids at 6 months, he has pooped at least once a day on average until now.

  • Have you tried prunes?

DD gets totally backed up from bananas so we do prunes after bananas.

  • Is this his first try of solids?  Try a 1/2 container of prunes...they definitely get things moving again!  (Yes, pears should normally work but if he's new to solids maybe ANY solid is making him constipated???)  Have you been giving him a lot of rice cereal or anything else constipating?

he's had bananas, apples and avocados besides pears.

he hasn't had any cereal... we skipped that.

he wasn't constipated from the other foods, so that was why I was confused.

I'll have to go buy some prunes. Would giving him some water help, you think?

  • Pears never did the trick for our LO either.  What really works for us are peaches or prunes (like the pp said).

My LO won't take water, so I can't really tell you.  Try the prunes, they work like a charm (be prepared for a blowout!).  They are good to have on hand for days like this, too.  GL!

    okay, I will. thanks!

  • I second (or third) the prunes.  The work wonders.

My DS was totally constipated after starting cereals at 4 mos. He was always a bit constipated (never went daily, it was like every other day or so). But he went to 5 days and was in pain when he finally pooped. That happened twice.  Finally the nurse at my pedi's office said "give him prunes" (before then they were saying prune juice and water) and ever since we started him on fruits, he's been OK.

The CRAB foods (carrots, rice, apples & bananas) do constipate him. But I'm good with giving him other foods (sweet potatoes, green beans, peaches) on those days. He's only had one blowout?yesterday, in fact. I guess we're lucky. LOL

  • My LO became constipated when we started solids.  My pedi put him on a powder lax. that we put in his morning oatmeal.  She said that boys are more prone to have constipation issues.  We'll keep him on it until he is 9 months.  She said by then his body will have learned to be regular then we can stop.  We have not had any problems since.

  • My daughter has the same reaction - she LOVES pears, and will down a whole container, then not poop for a couple of days...then when she does, pear poops are AWFUL (stinky).

I wouldn't give him pears exclusively...you can give prunes too.  My daughter is a huge fan of those.  I would alternate if you're incorporating pears i nto his diet.

i thought you were supposed to wait 4 days before introducing something new? he has never had prunes before. he could tomorrow though, if i follow the 4 day rule.
