Odd Birthing Choices

While I'm still on...

A FB friend of mine was posting something about an orgasmic birth.  I'm just now remembering that I wanted to google it and see WTH that is.  Anyone else know of any odd birthing options?  Maybe any weird stories from friends/family?  Just curious...

  • Orgasmic birth creeps me out a bit (the videos I have seen, anyway).

I have a friend having her second UC (unassisted childbirth, which is called by the TV "Freebirthing"). I think it is TOTALLY irresponsible. No midwife, just her alone in a bathtub. It might not be so bad if she lived closer than 20 minutes from a hospital, wasn't on her  6th birth, which also happens to be 5 births after a classic c/s. A classic c/s has a vertical scar and a higher chance of rupture. I worry. I am 100% for homebirth with a midwife (I would have had one if we were closer to the hospital, we live 10 minutes more out of town than my friend) but this gets the side-eye from me.

She's literally all by herself?  The dad's not even there to witness/cut the cord?

I saw something like that on Discovery Health.  I think it was called "Twins by Surprise."  Some lady decided to have babies in her bathtub and do her own prenatal care.  She delivered two breach babies, and was proud of herself for it.  I thought it was irresponsible.  I, like you, am okay with a midwife.  There definitely needs to be someone who knows what he/she is doing.

They have 5 other kids, he watches them. He may come in and out, but last time, she cut the cord (4 years ago).

I had a scary birth experience with DD (she had a triple compression with the umbilical cord) so if I didn't have an emergency c-section she would have died.  I couldn't imagine going through birth unassisted because you never know what is going to happen.

I did want a natural birth - no drugs but that didn't happen either.  After 6 hrs. on pitocin I begged for the epi!

I have never heard of this option before. I'm not sure how a woman would achieve an O while birthing. It just hurts too dang much. Hmmm...

Normally I would be too, but orgasming while birthing your baby just seems wrong to me...

I've never heard of orgasmic birthing and it doesn't sound like something I'd like to try.

I also know someone who birthed their child at home, without a midwife or doctor. She ate the placenta afterwards (making it into a smoothie) and, I'm sorry, but that makes me want to throw up just thinking about it!

For me, I've had complications with both deliveries (pre-e with DD and cord wrapped around DS's neck), so I am glad I was in a hospital being monitored.

    Ick!

I know it's supposed to be good for you, but so is most food.  Why the eff would you eat that...it came out of your VAGINA!

Indifferent  That's just too much for me. God forbid something goes wrong.

  • Wow.  And I thought it was weird when a woman I know sent out invitations to family and friends to be there with her during her home water birth.  Now I have nothing against a home water birth (with a midwife), but she sent out a LOT of invitations.  Weird.

I'm with you, that would be awesome, but it sounds highly unlikely to me.

People do it because it is full of nutrients and can help battle PPD.

I had PPD and if I can get enough information about it and am convinced enough (and can have someone else do the process) I might consider taking it in pill form (you get someone to dry it out, pulverize it, put it into gel caps). Zoloft did nothing for me, and it was the only thing safe while breastfeeding.

The smoothie or cooking it up with onions thing though...I cannot even imagine and I think I might barf if I tried it.

I had no idea that it helped with PPD.  The pill form would be much easier to stomach, you could just pretend you were taking a PNV.  But the smoothie or stir fry....

  • I have a real problem with some of those shows on discovery health about "freebirthing".  It gives the impression that it is "safe" to do that b/c all of those people have uncomplicated deliveries with healthy babies.  I work in a hospital and I have seen a few unassisted births go very bad.  I am all for home births with a midwife present but to have a bith unassisted is very risky.

I know! I can't even take liquid medication (like cough syrup) without gagging so I know that there is no way I'd be able to eat the freaking placenta.

Um just reading that made me gag, I couldn't imagine actually eating the placenta!!

Agreed, same here. And now I feel like I might vomit.
