Re: GD Newbie question(s)

  • 1. my OB wants to induce me at 39 weeks.  I was successfully induced at 39 weeks with my son too so I'm fine with it.

    2. I don't go to the doctor any more than normal.

    3. no extra ultrasounds for me.  My OB is fine to do things normally if  I keep the GD diet controlled and so far my numbers have all been good.  A lot of doctors do extra ultrasounds.

    4. I got the call on a Thursday and didn't meet with my dietician until the following Monday.  Between that time I did a lot of online research.  By the time I went to my class I felt pretty informed and the dietician just reinforced what I had found online.

    5.  I started myself on the diet right away because I felt that it was important.  Of course I wasn't testing my blood, but I started counting carbs and cutting out sugar.

  • I was comin on here to ask a lot of the same questions!  Thanks for asking.  And thank you to the PP for answers.   I just got diagnosed on Friday so I need to call the dietician on Monday to make an appt.   I want to try and start the diet right away.  I only failed 2/4 of the tests in the 3 hour so I don't think mine is horrible, but GD is GD so I'm going to follow it as best as I can.

  • 1. Did your doctor mention anything to you about possibly being induced before your due date?Yes, he said we would discuss it at my 38 week appointment.  2. Did you have to go to the doctor more then normal because you had GD?Nope, same number of times as anyone else. 3. Did they give you more ultrasounds.Yes, I have had 2 growth ultrasounds since he is measuring big. 4. They made this diagnois so important but they leave we hanging for 5 days before they tell me anything to do or i meet with a specialistI didn't meet with the dietician and doctor for over a week after I was diagnosed. Don't worry...you have plenty of time to get it under control.  5. Do i eat what i want this weekend because i know Monday when i meet with the dietian and other people i wont be able to eat like that anymore?I started to modify my diet before I met with the dietician. I cut out sweets, stopped eating out, limited carbs, and tried to eat protein with every meal. When I went to the dietician, I found more details of the diet and everything they wanted. Can't hurt to start right away!

  • 1. Did your doctor mention anything to you about possibly being induced before your due date?

So far my OB hasn't mentioned anything.

    2. Did you have to go to the doctor more then normal because you had GD?

I have to see an endocrinlogist weekly.

    3. Did they give you more ultrasounds.

I have an ultrasound every month, but have had to do this pretty much all along due to low amniotic fluid.

    4. They made this diagnois so important but they leave we hanging for 5 days before they tell me anything to do or i meet with a specialist

Once I was diagnosed, they made an appt for me at the endocrinologist/dietician the next day.  They didn't tell me to eat any different until I went to that appt.

    5. Do i eat what i want this weekend because i know Monday when i meet with the dietian and other people i wont be able to eat like that anymore?

I would just try to eat a well balanced diet through the weekend, and cut out all refined sugar.

I know this is overwhelming at first, but sounds like you are already on the right track trying to educate yourself.  Once I was placed on a special diet, I feel like I have more energy that I have had throughout the pregnancy, which is a plus.  Good luck to you!

  • 1. Did your doctor mention anything to you about possibly being induced before your due date?

yes if I end up on medication I  will be induced by 39 weeks, if I can control via diet then they will let me go to my due date but no longer. Although my due date may change

    2. Did you have to go to the doctor more then normal because you had GD?

yes and no, I am still seeing the OB as much as a normal pregnant woman would but had 3 appointments at the diabetes center within 3 weeks

    3. Did they give you more ultrasounds.

I have had one growth U/S because of the fact that I have been measuring a week ahead since about 20 weeks and the GD they wanted to see where she is at growth wise. I may end up with more and I may not depends on what the U/S showed

    4. They made this diagnois so important but they leave we hanging for 5 days before they tell me anything to do or i meet with a specialist

I don't know on this one what to tell you. I had my 3 hour test, 4 days later I had an OB appointment and that day I had the referal to the diabetes center.I met with the Dietician the next day. Because of scheduling concerns at the diabetes center I didn't meet with the nurse educator and get my monitor for a week after seeing the dietician so I wasn't testing my sugars yet but had the diet plan going already.

    5. Do i eat what i want this weekend because i know Monday when i meet with the dietian and other people i wont be able to eat like that anymore?

I would do what you can now to be sensible about carbs, it will make it easier. Just try to stay away from refined white carbs (white flours, white bread, sugar). incorporate as much fresh vegatables that aren't startchy (so avoid potatoes, corn and peas for sure)as you can, protien sources like nuts, lean meats, cheese and peanut butter are all pretty good for you. And cut out obvious things like candy, cookies, ice cream, etc until you meet with the dietician and they give you your personal carb allowances.

If you want fruit have a small piece of fruit and avoid juices the actual fruit is better for you because it still has the fiber. Juices even 100% no sugar added juices impact your blood sugar more because the fiber isn't there to help counteract.

  • 1. Did your doctor mention anything to you about possibly being induced before your due date?

We are discussing it on Tuesday when I am 38 weeks.  If my growth ultrasound shows a lot more growth (and higher amniotic fluid, which I have been having) then yes, I will be induced.

    2. Did you have to go to the doctor more then normal because you had GD?

I do!  I have to see a GD seperate from my OB.  In the beginning I had to go more often (weekly or biweekly) b/c I couldn't get my fasting number under control.  Once I was put on Glyburide at night, that was fine and I started going every 3 weeks.  I also have to go 2x a week for NST's "non stress tests"  This didn't start until 36 weeks though.

    3. Did they give you more ultrasounds.

I have had growth u/s monthly since week 18 due to other complications, but it became more with GD.  I now go every 2-3 weeks.  I do have higher amniotic fluid so that has something to do with it.

    4. They made this diagnois so important but they leave we hanging for 5 days before they tell me anything to do or i meet with a specialist

They made an appt. for me for the next week, but I called as well to speak with the dietician about what I should be doing in the meantime.  She helped explain the diet and ideas of things to eat.  She also had put in the prescriptions for all of the testing equiptment so I could test for the week before I got there and see what was going on.

    5. Do i eat what i want this weekend because i know Monday when i meet with the dietian and other people i wont be able to eat like that anymore?

I wouldn't just eat normally this weekend.  It would be good to start the diet as soon as you can.  My bit of advice is just to remember to not eat carbs without protein.  Even though I am on meds, my body was able deal well with food.  The only time I ever really had small spikes was if I ate a ton of carbs and not enough protein.

Having GD wasn't as bad as I thought.  It is pretty managable once you get used to things!

  • 1. Did your doctor mention anything to you about possibly being induced before your due date?  She won't let me go past my due date but will let me go to it if everything else is looking well

    2. Did you have to go to the doctor more then normal because you had GD?

No extra trips to the OB

    3. Did they give you more ultrasounds.

I have a biophysical at 35 weeks and every week thereafter until she is born.  This includes an u/s

    4. They made this diagnois so important but they leave we hanging for 5 days before they tell me anything to do or i meet with a specialist

Not sure what to say about this.  I took the 1 hour on Thursday, back on tuesday for the 3 hours, got the call on Wednesday and met with the dietitian on Friday.  There was definitely no time wasted for me.

    5. Do i eat what i want this weekend because i know Monday when i meet with the dietian and other people i wont be able to eat like that anymore?

The nurse told me to start cutting back on my refined sugars when I failed the one hour so I would definitely not go hog wild this weekend.

  • 1. Did your doctor mention anything to you about possibly being induced before your due date?

Yes, I'm going in for a c-section/induction on Monday, I will be 39w1d.

    2. Did you have to go to the doctor more then normal because you had GD?

Yes,  Since 32 weeks I was having weekly OB appointments, plus twice weekly NSTs and weekly AFI checks.

    3. Did they give you more ultrasounds.

I had more ultrasounds than normal pregnancies to begin with I was getting ultrasounds every 6 weeks with MFM.  Once they wanted to do the AFI checks, I was having weekly ultrasounds since 32 weeks.  By Monday morning I will have had 14 ultrasounds.

    4. They made this diagnois so important but they leave we hanging for 5 days before they tell me anything to do or i meet with a specialist

I was told on a Monday at my appointment and they scheduled an appointment with the diabetic educator that Wednesday.

    5. Do i eat what i want this weekend because i know Monday when i meet with the dietian and other people i wont be able to eat like that anymore?

I wouldn't.  I'm not sure how much you failed, but I would cut down on carbs. You'll be amazed how many things have carbs in it and what you can and can not eat.  My motto for GD has always been it's about the baby, nothing is more important to me than a healthy baby.

I've had GD since before Christmas.  I've survived Christmas, Christmas parties, three baby showers, our anniversary and Valentine's Day all with my sugars well controlled.   I was also on insulin prior to breakfast due to the doctors not communicating that well, I was testing one hour after and they thought it was two hours after, so I was taken off insulin in the morning when they wanted me to test two hours as I was eating more to keep up with the insulin.  I'm still on the NPH insulin to keep my fasting numbers down.  They do believe that my body has regulated itself out as the past two weeks my fasting numbers have been under 75 and even 65 and my post-meals were well into the 90's.  I don't have to test after meals anymore, but I'm continuing the diet.  I only test the fastings in case it's below 70.  Good luck and just remember there is light at the end of the tunnel as I'm expecting to have a calzone next weekend for dinner one day.

  • 1. Did your doctor mention anything to you about possibly being induced before your due date?

When we asked he said he would let me go to my due date.

    2. Did you have to go to the doctor more then normal because you had GD?

Yes. He is making me go weekly. Last week however they found an irregular heartbeat. So now I have to go twice a week starting this week for NST and I meet with a pediatric cardiologist on Tuesday morning.

    3. Did they give you more ultrasounds.

I've had one extra, only because they wanted to check her heart. I will have a growth ultrasound at36 weeks also I believe.

    4. They made this diagnois so important but they leave we hanging for 5 days before they tell me anything to do or i meet with a specialist

I found out I failed on a Wed and had to wait til the next Monday to go to the nutritionist.

    5. Do i eat what i want this weekend because i know Monday when i meet with the dietian and other people i wont be able to eat like that anymore?

I would google what you can do right now to help. Avoid sugars and sweets. I felt that I was more prepared when I met with my nutritionist since I had already been trying to follow some sort of  GD diet on my own since finding out.
