hospitals with no LC?

We went to a BFing class this week, and the LC teaching it said that our hospital has no LC! I thought that was odd, but helpful to know. She said some of the nurses have periodic training, but that none of them are experts. She gave us her contact info and said to call her if we have any questions, thank goodness.

Does anyone else's hospital not employ a LC?

  • Mine doesn't.   To make it a bit worse, we don't have any lactation consultants in this area. at. all.   Just hotlines numbers to call if we need help.   Rural area, though.  We have public health nurses that help a lot and have a lot of good info. at their disposals, though.

That's good that your nurses know what they're doing. The LC consultant said the nurses here tend to confuse the new moms. They're not trained very often, and a lot of them will give you conflicting information. I'm glad I knew all this ahead of time, lol.

  • I dont know if this will help you but my aunt used to work for WIC as a LC and they would get calls all the time from people who werent on WIC and she would still help them. So that might be an option for you but that was a few years ago and so Im not sure they would still do that.

The nurses in the hospital are also really good here and really push breastfeeding and seem to know their stuff, which is good.   With my first, I was told I had the perfect breastfeeding nipples while still on the delivery bed getting stitched (I was attempting for the first time feeding Olivia), it was kind of funny.

  • call your pediatrician! My DD's doctor has an LC on staff. Not only did I have the hospital's LC for guidance, the doctor's LC came for a visit to introduce herself and see how we were doing.
