How much to pay a nanny?

We are only going to need about 10 hours a week of daycare, so we are looking into getting a nanny instead. I have no idea how much they charge, or do we set the rate?

TIA Smile

Re: How much to pay a nanny?

  • My sister went through a nanny service and I think hers charges around $17 - $22 an hour.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but a nanny service costs more, right? I plan on going through sittercity to find someone or use my mom's neighbor. But we are trying to get an idea of costs before we meet with anyone.

  • Hey there,

I am actually a nanny. There's a lot of factors that can decide what the nanny might ask for. (Do you want them to do any housework, their education/experience, your residence, etc)

If you only need 10 hours a week, I think sittercity is a great place to start looking. Also, check (or post) on the group GardenMoms. Also, if you live near a college, sometimes they will have a place to post things. I went to a school where everyone was interested in working with children/families so many of us babysat/nannied. I know a lot of BU and BC education majors who also do a lot of sitting. You mentioned a family friend could maybe do it, that's another great idea.

I would say in general you should expect to pay about 14-20 for one baby. Maybe even a little less, depending on the factors listed above. Depending on the person, they might do the baby's laundry, or light cleaning. If you have any other ?s I'm happy to help answer them. I help many of my friends looking for nannies. :) GL!

  • Tizrahjoy, thank you so much for all of that info! It helps a lot. We will probably meet with a couple people from sittercity as well as my mom's neighbor to see who we are both comfortable with the most.

  • I went thru sittercity and found a college student to come in 2x/wk for 3hrs/day;  I pay her $40 for the day (which is about $13/hr);  she's amazing and worth the $$.  Sittercity has an application to help you decide how much to pay someone (we went on the high end; I think the app suggested $10-13/hr)

  • I was a nanny for five years prior to finding out I was pregnant and I charged $15 per hour to start. You can probably find someone who charges a little less, but most professional nannies I know charge at least that. Good luck!
