Help me if you have a crock pot

Ok, I got one as a wedding gift and it's been collecting dust for almost 4 years, but I really want to use it!

i just don't know how - the whole just set it and forget is what makes me nervous.  So if you have some good recipes - post em here!!!

  • If you are unsure, you can always try the packaged Crockpot meals. I love the Chicken and Dumplings one. I believe it's Tyson who makes it. You'd be surprised, im my crockpot cook book, there are recipes to make cakes, although I haven't tried them. I'll email you the ones I have.

    I also got her book as well and follow the recipes there. I never leave the crockpot on when I leave the house, I usually use it when I'm home and I can watch it. My mom uses it all the time, but she leaves it on a cutting board so the kitchen counter won't get too hot.

  • I just started using one. I usually make pot roast and add all the seasonings and veggies and let it cook all day. I used to be nervous about leaving it on all day but I'm not anymore. I usually leave it on top of the stove, because I'm afraid of it ruining the counters.

    Glad you use it-lol- I am the one who bought you your crockpot and I had no idea what the heck it was at the time! LOL

    The best recipe i have ever made in it is pulled pork! SOOOOOOOO yummy. You put a pork tenderloin in with a can of regular soda (coke or dr pepper) and cook it on low all day. Take it out at the end of the day, drain the juices and pull the pork apart, mix in your pfavorite bbq sauce. Absolutely deeeeeeeeeeelish!

    Also, allreceipes.com has some good ones as well. There's a tab for slow cooker meals.

    i use mine at least twice a week. Leave it while I am at work and walk in the door and only have to make sides usually.

    I swear, it IS that easy. Don't put in diet soda though, put in regular AND it stinks (well at least I think) while it is cooking. I make it with homemade mash potatoes and some bbq beans the first night and then usually get great onion rolls at publix and make delicious sandwiches the next day. Eric love this meal and it's by far one of the easiest things ever! 

     

  • I looove my crockpot. I don't use it as often as I should though. The little crockpot books they sell in the paying lanes at publix are awesome. I think I've liked what I've made from those books the most. Use it, you'll love it. Most meals you just leave cooking all day and serve when they're done, and it starts smelling sooooooo good!

  • btw, here's one

    Easy Shrimp Creole

    1 large onion, chopped
    2 ribs celery, chopped
    1 large green bell pepper, chopped
    1 clove garlic, minced
    2 (14.5 oz) cans diced tomatoes
    2 (8 oz) cans tomato sauce
    1 tsp paprika
    1 bay leaf
    1 tsp sugar
    4 drops hot sauce
    1 lb shrimp, shelled & deveined
    salt and pepper to taste

    Combine onion, celery, green pepper, garlic, tomatoes, tomato sauce, paprika, bay leaf, sugar and hot sauce in crock pot; mix well. Cover and cook on High for 4 hours. During the last 30 min. add the shrimp and cook until they turn pink. Remove bay leaf and serve Creole with rice. Serves 6.

  • I use mine and love it!  I made a super healthy chicken and veggies yesterday that was delicious.  I find beef and pork fare really well but chicken gets overdone easily.  Ribs are great in the crock pot too.  I used to have a scary crock pot that I would leave on the stove but I have a nice one now.  I've never had an issue with either.  Good luck!  You will love the time you save!
  • I love my crockpot!  but we don't like to leave it on when we aren't home so we do it when we know we'll be around during the day or not gone for long.  Beef stew is my favorite!  Someone just created a facebook group on it, I'll send you a suggestion for it!
  • I have been loving my crock pot lately, especially since I have a newborn in the house.  I set everything up in the morning after dropping the kids off at school and walk away.  I don't leave the house with it on...so far I've made chili, beef stew, chicken soup, ribs, and chicken caccittori (sp?).  So easy and the food comes out delish!

    We have a CD with like 100s of recipes that came with ours. I will see if Abel can make you a copy.

  • I love my crockpot and only bought it about a year ago.  I love the crockpot365 blog that Day mentioned.  Also, I do simple things like roast a chicken in it. 

    One whole chicken, cut up some carrots, potatoes, onion, and celery, top with a Lipton packet (I like the savory herb and garlic), add about 1/4 cup of chicken stock - cook on low for 8 hours and the meat falls off the bone and it's super yummy. 

    I love making a whole chicken, then I save the leftover meat in the freezer until I have enough to do another crockpot meal with the leftovers (see crockpot365 for her Enchilada Chicken and Buffalo Chicken Lasagna recipes).

  • Oh, and slow cooker liners are my best friend.  Worth every penny because it makes clean up a breeze.  They are in the baggie aisle of the grocery store.

  • I got all inspired to get one one yr, and then it just sat in the box for almost 2 yrs!  Finally, I used it for the first time about 2 yrs ago, but while I was home.  I too was scared of living it alone.  But then nothing happened; house was intact, so I kept using it!  I also leave it on the stovetop.

    I use it about once a month, but wish I used it more!  I love coming home to the house smelling oh so yummy!  My favs are pulled pork and chili!  The website Day posted is GREAT.  Also, Crockpot.com has some awesome recipes.  Some of them take time to prep the night before.  I usually organize my ingredients the night before, wake up a bit early to set it, and off to work I go!  : )

  • Oh, I forgot about the garbanzos... amazing!

    Ingredients
    1 bag of chick peas (12 oz)
    1 smoked pig's foot
    1 onion (medium)
    1/2 green pepper
    2 garlic cloves
    2 T tomato sauce
    1 envelope Sason Accent
    4 small potatoes
    1/2 bag of chorizo
    1/2 bag of diced ham
    1.5 cups rice
    Olive oil

    Preparation
    Rinse beans. Place in deep bowl, and fill with water (approximately 3x amount of beans). Let sit overnight in refrigerator. Next morning, drain remaining water (surprisingly, there won't be too much left), and place in Crock Pot. Fill Crock Pot with approximately 8 cups of water, and add pig's foot. Cook on low for 8 hours.

    Once beans are complete, time to prepare seasoning. Chop potatoes into 1/2 in pieces. Chop onion, green pepper, and garlic (I ran them through the food processor). Add to pan over medium heat, and add about 2 T of olive oil. Let simmer (about 10 min). Add beans (you can either eat the pig's foot, or add to the pan), chopped potatoes, chorizo, and ham. Stir. Add Sason Accent. Stir. Let simmer for about 30 minutes.

    Serve beans over white, with a nice glass of wine.

  • Carolina BBQ Pork

    Ingredients
    2 onions, quartered (I used 1 large sweet onions)
    2 tablespoon brown sugar
    1 tablespoon paprika
    2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon pepper
    1 4 to 6 lb boneless pork butt or shoulder roast (since it was only us two, I cooked 2 lbs)
    2/3 cup cider vinegar
    4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (I'll prob eliminate next time, as it was a bit spicy)
    1 1/2 teaspoon sugar
    1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
    1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
    1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    Hamburger buns

    Directions

    1. Place onions in stoneware
    2. Combine brown sugar, paprika, salt and pepper rub over roast. Place roast over onions
    3. Combine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, red pepper flakes, sugar, mustard, garlic salt and cayenne stir to mix well. Drizzle 1/4 of vinegar mixture over roast.
    4. Cover and refrigerate remaining vinegar mixture.
    5. Cover cook on Low 10 to 12 hours or on High 5 to 6 hours.
    6. Remove meat and onions and drain. Chop or shred meat and chop onions.
    7. Serve meat and onions on buns. Pass remaining vinegar mixture to drizzle over sandwiches.

  • America's Fav Pot Roast

    Ingredients:
    3 1/2 to 4 pounds beef arm or boneless pot roast
    1/4 cup flour
    2 teaspoons salt
    1/8 teaspoon pepper
    3 carrots, pared, sliced lengthwise and cut into 2-inch pieces (I got a bag already sliced)
    3 potatoes, peeled and quartered
    2 small onions, sliced (I used large sweet onion)
    1 stalk celery, cut into 2-inch pieces (I didn't add)
    1 jar (2 ounces) mushrooms, drained (I didn't add)

    Preparation:
    Trim all excess fat from roast.
    Combine ? cup flour, the salt and pepper. Coat meat with the flour mixture.
    Place all vegetables except mushrooms in Crock-Pot and top with roast (cut roast in half, if necessary, to fit easily).
    Spread mushrooms evenly over top of roast.
    Cover and cook on Low for 10 to 12 hours.
    Season to taste before serving. Serves 4 to 6.

  • I've only ever made pulled pork in it!  I use a recipe with Boston butt (cheaper than tenderloin!),and it's super easy.  I got it from Emily (santafe) who used to be on the board. 

    -6 lb. boston butt pork

    -2 cans beef broth

    -1/2 cup coffee

    -1 bottle bbq sauce

    -salt/pepper

    1. Cut roast in half and salt and pepper it.

    2. Put in slowcooker with broth and coffee.

    3. Cook on 8-10 hour mode. (I leave it overnight)

    4. Take out and pull apart with fork, removing bone and fat.

    5. Put back in with contents of 1 bottle of bbq sauce on low setting but only for about 3 hours.

    et voila!  Delicious and super easy.  I usually serve it with rolls for sandwiches, but we often eat it just by itself or with baked beans.  I am making it overnight for Graciela's birthday party tomorrow!

    oh, you must try it.  It's a pretty tiny place so it's always packed.  Great for take-outs.  It's between Glades and Spanish River on the West side of Federal Hwy.   :)~
