Yesterday, I received a new lens for my camera. Not cheap. UPS left it sitting on my porch. I had no clue that it was there and probably wouldn't have until late. He didn't even leave it on the bench, just on the ground where my dogs could have gotten it. I am debating whether or not to call and talk to someone about it. This isn't the first time they have left something valuable just sitting on the porch. When I ordered it there was no place that said a signature was required so it is not like I could have requested that. Are they somehow insured if something were to happen to the item? What if someone saw it and took it, would they have to replace it? Strange.
Re: Why don't you have to sign?
unless the company requires a signature they're not going to ask for one.
the delivered it to your door- that's where their job & responsibility for it ends.
if you dislike the fact that a sig wasn't required then complain to the company you purchased it from.

This is what I learned when I worked for customer service at an expensive retail company - if the company does not ship it 'signature required', it is at the UPS driver's discretion whether or not to leave it at the door.
If something were to happen (item got damaged, stolen, lost, etc) the company files a claim with UPS and replaces the item. UPS reimburses the company for the cost of the item.
ETA: We also did 'investigations' first - if the delivery info says it was delivered but the customer never got it, we got back in contact with the driver to find out exactly where it was left. Sometimes he left at the garage instead of the door, or delivered it to the wrong house, etc.
This, no doorbell or anything. It was obvious someone was home, both H and my vehicle was in the driveway.
Yes, they would replace it. I live in an apartment and I have had neighbours accept packages and not give them to me or steal packages. Both times we were either refunded or they resent the stuff.
For some reason our UPS and FedEX people were just leaving packages inside the 1st door and not putting them infront of our apartment door. And when I lived at my moms the UPS guy would leave boxes sitting in the rain (she had a porch too, he would leave the packages at the side door though)-My DH used to work at UPS and he said they really didn't care how the packages were treated- which stinks, but they are union and as he said they "can't get fired"
