acupuncture for labor & delivery

Did anyone out there use acupuncture to manage pain during labor and delivery? I would love to hear about your experiences, especially success/failure as far as avoiding drugs and epidurals. Also, what's the process like, how early do you need to start seeing the acupuncturist? How much did it cost?

  • I haven't yet, but my midwife works with a acupuncturist if needed.

  • My husband is an acupuncturist, so I'm a big advocate, but I have to say that I was not up for it come the transition stage.

He worked with me applying pressure to my lower back as I was working through my early contractions.  I had a med-free labor and delivery, but with the transitional stage hit, I was in so much pain and so miserable that I didn't even want anyone to touch me.  (I'm going with an epidural this time!)

Of course, everyone's delivery experience is different, but I think it would be difficult to be receiving acupuncture during labor and delivery.  When needles are inserted, you generally try not to move because the needles might irritate you.  That's pretty hard to do during labor!  But acupuncture can definitely help with discomfort during pregnancy, inducing you and even slipping over a breeched baby.

    Good luck!
