My almost 2.5 year old shows NO interest in the potty

No interest whatsoever.  He doesn't really have a typical telltale sign that he's going, and he doesn't say anything to us about having to go.  We have a potty for him, but he doesn't really care much for it.  He's the same way at daycare......just doesn't seem interested in it or even bothered by diapers.

Any suggestions?  Daycare uses stickers for rewards, but again - DS doesn't care.  We've thought about using something edible for a reward.........but I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Does anyone have a great potty training victory story to share?

  • My son will be 4 in a few months, and he still doesn't always tell me that he has to go. He won't poop in it yet. Still working on that.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much.  My DS didn't care at 2.5 either.  Around 2.75 I started letting him run around bare bottomed in the house and kept the potty chair nearby.  Once I could get him on the potty to finish, it clicked and he picked up on it quickly.  But, he wasn't PTd until he was just over 3 y/o.  I know a lot of people that have just waited and their kids have done great.  I won't say that there weren't bumps along the way for us, but I can't say if that's b/c DS was or wasn't ready.  he is a really strong willed kid and regressed after the novelty of PTg wore off.  He also still doesn't care - a dirty pull up in the AM doesn't bother him in the least and I don't think there's anything I can do about that.  DD has always hated to be dirty and P'T'd much earlier b/c of that.  Kids are just different.

  • I read the average age for boys is 38 months, which means some take even longer than that. My son is almost 3 1/2 and shows very little interest. I think I'm going cold turkey this weekend.
  • most boys I know didn't potty train until 3 or later. My DD's class at daycare has 3 girls and 2 boys all 2.5 to 3.5, the girls are all trained but neither boy is.

  • I knew that boys generally took longer than girls.  And DS's class at daycare is mostly girls.  But whenever I see all of the "awards" on the bathroom door for Potty Training Achievement, I feel like I'm doing something wrong since DS is nowhere close to it.

    Thanks for the support!

  • We tried M&M's when DD was almost 3--it was after Halloween (I remember the M&M's being black and orange), and she turned 3 in January.

The M&M's did the trick--she got one for pee and 2 for pooping in the potty.  I got that from Jon and Kate + 8 back before they went all Hollywood.

I was not crazy about using food as a reward, but we were getting desperate.  She showed absolutely no interest in stickers, rewards, etc. either.

  • My DD is 3 1/2 and goes potty for me but is not consistent.  She's just not ready.  My son who is 2 goes more consistently and will be potty trained well before my DD.  You can't make them be ready.  Give it a break for a few weeks and try again.

  • My DS was nowhere near PTing at 2.5.  He would sit in a dirty diaper for hours if I let him.  It wasn't until he was 3.5 that he finally cared.  I tried every tactic you've heard of off & on between 18 months & his 3rd birthday.  Then I gave up trying.  6 months later, out of the blue, he said, "Momma I have to use the potty."  And he did.  The next weekend we did a modified "3 day Potty Training" using a sticker chart as a reward him for staying dry every 30 minutes.  We never asked him if he had to go, but only waited for him to tell us.  When he did use the potty we went crazy celebrating & each time gave him a "trophy" I made out of TP roll & a template I found on Nick Jr's website.  He had 2 accidents that weekend & none during the day after that.  He took about 10 days to be night-trained.

I've talked to a lot of moms and none of their boys were PTed before 3 years old.  None.  Well, unless you count my DH who, according to his mother, was PT'd before 18 month.  I call B.S.

  • Another vote for after 3 years.  My son showed no interest, so we waited until he was 3 years and some change.  Went cold turkey with underwear and he trained in a few days.  It did help that all the other kids at daycare were already trained so he had seen it a million times there.

Don't worry about it yet.  All the other kids being done just paves the way for an easier road for you :)

  • My son is 2.75 and just started training last week. That being said, he's nearly trained. Waiting until he's a few months older might be easier. My goal was to have him trained by 3. I think that's a reasonable age for a boy. GL!
