DD was 2.5. Yep, I was *that* parent. In my defense, we went to England right at her first birthday and I was NOT taking it away before that. Then I found out I was pg and she was only getting it at night, so it wasn't a big deal. Then we waited until after DS was here.....and so on.
I will say it was super easy once we decided it was time. She mailed them to the binky fairy and got playdoh in return. Never shed a tear or anything.
around 15-18mo he only got it at bed and nap time at home (not at school at all anymore).... just about a month or so ago we had the paci fairy come and take all his pacis (he left them out for her in a big bowl) and she left him a BIG toy (batman cave he really wanted). He has never looked back. I'm glad we let him have it for bed that long- esp with the twins being born - he is such a good sleeper and i didn't want to rock the boat- and it was his only 'lovey" item.
my goal was to make sure they were gone by 3 y/o - and it worked.

awwww GREAT idea!
We will not be getting rid of them any time soon because of the new baby. But she only gets them for sleep and sometimes in the car. I have been very verbal lately about taking them from her and saying "you don't need that anymore". She is understanding me and will hand it to me while I change her diaper.
BUT if we are taking her up to bed she now makes sure we don't forget to grab one from the stash... she says "Ffffaaff" which we now know means "pacifier". LOL

My Mom did something similar with my sister who is 12 years younger than me. She had her collect all her binky's and put them in a bag. Then they went shopping and she was able to pick out one toy and that is how she "paid" for it.
We haven't taken it away yet. But within the last 2 weeks I have been limiting it to naps, at night and in the car if she needs it.
I'd originally have said 18 months, but baby #2 will be arriving when DS is 18 months, and I don't think that will be a good time for any of us to deal with him giving up the paci. So, before 2 will probably be our goal. If it's a little later than that, it's not a big deal to me.

p.s. A cashier at the mall told me DS was too old for it when he was 10 or 11 months old and bragged that he'd never given his daughter one. He went on for so long that I finally told him that doctors actually recommend it now at night to prevent SIDS. I don't know if he didn't know what I was talking about or if he was offended, but that shut him up.

I am SO glad to read these responses! I never really thought twice about Ava still using it at bedtime/naptime -- until last week when I read a post where every.single.responder had taken it away by a year at the latest (many by 6 or 8 months). I instantly felt like a horrible parent. We aren't taking Ava's away any time soon, since there will be two more babies in the house very soon. I am hoping by the age of 2.
I asked everyone I cared to have an opinion from...my pedi, my dentist, my aunt (family doctor) and they ALL said it is not a big deal at all to have them until 3 or 4 even.
I'm not worrying about it until he's 2. At that point we'll probably do one of those snappy ideas you guys posted above. (Maybe earlier) We'll probably start working on getting him to only take it at nap/bed soon though just to transition away from it.
I worry though because when he doesn't have it he puts his thumb in his mouth. He's not necessarily sucking it, but it's in place of the Nuk. So I'm afraid if I take it away he'll start sucking his thumb and I can't ever take that away!
Re: When will you stop using the pacifier/nuk/binky?

DS still has his, but he isn't attached.
