How much tv does your lo watch?

Ok my ds is 22 months, and I caved.  I let him watch Sesame Street a few times already within the past few weeks.  I understand the whole "no watching tv prior to 2 years old" concept, but sometimes you just need a break.

Re: How much tv does your lo watch?

  • my LO is obviously not "watching" much of anything at this point, but I will have no issue letting her watch some Sesame Street and other educational children's programming once she shows some interest. I feel that they are a  great tool for language building and other learning development. I won't want to park her there all day, but 30 minutes here and there I see no problem with.

  • DD is 2 1/2 and generally watches 30-45 minutes of Elmo's world on DVD during the week while I shower in the morning.  She doesn't watch any TV on weekends. It seems to be a good balance because she does actually learn something from watching it, but she's not watching it for a long period. There have been days where she'll watch for longer (if I'm sick or she's sick or we're on a road trip).
  • DS did not watch TV until about 21 months, the TV was always on in our home and he would actually play with toys beside the tv and just never interested by it. Around his 2nd birthday we slowly started to introduce a cartoon in the am (to give us a few minutes to shower and such). It was almost weird how he went from no TV to being able to sit and watch an entire movie (on car trips...which was a lifesaver) At 3 he would much rather be doing something than watching TV, and would prefer watching the cooking shows! Hopefully we have the same discipline with DC#2
  • 30 minutes a day- started at 19 months or so.

  • Honestly, our tv is on all. the. time. during this time of year.  Usually they watch a movie here or there (when they need to wind down a bit), but often time it's a dvd with songs, activities or learning.  They love to dance around and DD#2 get a kicks out of calling out letters and numbers.

That's not to say they sit there like bumps on log zoning out to a tv all day.  DS is building trains, DD is riding her trike around the dining area/kitchen island, they both give her babies rides in the multitude of strollers we have around here, he chases her, she chases back, etc.

In the summer, it's on around lunch ( I watch Y&R) and after that we are outside.

  • a few minutes here and there

DD is 17 months.  She won't stay tuned for more than 5-8 minutes.  So, she watches 5 minutes or so of Yo Gabba Gabba or Sesame Street a few times a day...usually when I am making the bed, preparing lunch, and with DH when he gets home from work and I am at work.

So maybe 30 minutes/day most days.

Btu she does have this video game (arg - thanks, MIL) that she is kind of getting addicted to.  I mean, she has to bounce and spin and it counts and sings and teaches her animals and prepositions, I suppose.  But seeing her staring at a screen bothers me.  I guess she sees DH and me doing it though....

  • We were diligent about Jack not even beig in the same room as a turned on TV until 16 months (with a Gator football exception!).  Now, he gets about 20 minutes a day of either a video or Sesame Street or Curious George.  He probably actually watches ~10 minutes.

  • DD#1 was about 2.25YO when she first started watching TV.

DD#2 was 20 months - when she gave up her nap.

Both girls are allowed 1 hour of TV when DS takes his nap in the afternoon.

DS doesn't watch any TV and if we're anywhere and a TV is on, he doesn't pay any attention to it since he doesn't know what it is.

  • DD is 17 mos and i just had a baby so yes, she's watching tv.  i'd say a total of 1 hr a day.
  • As much as I try to avoid it, Miles is fascinated by the TV.  We don't have it on often, but when we do, he will just stare at it for several minutes at a time.  Most of the time, this means the TV is on for about 2 hours a week, and of that, Miles stares at it for 5 minutes here and there.  Last weekend, though, all 3 of us were sick.  We watched old movies all day Sunday.  Miles napped and played and cuddled, mostly, but I know he watched it from time to time.

On another note, having a child has made me realize that TV's are EVERYwhere - stores, restaurants, offices.  It makes it difficult to avoid.

  • Now that it's winter and we're confined to the house because of snow/bad weather, about an hour a day, give or take.  If I'm not feeling well, he may get to watch an extra episode of Sesame Street...but that's rare.  The days that we are busy with moms group outings/playdates, he doesn't usually watch any.  It's not uncommon for him to go a couple/few days and not watch it at all.  When the weather gets warmer, we spend a lot of time outside and then he'll watch very little/almost no tv.

I think, in moderation, a little tv watching is fine.

  • I have the TV on PBS in the morning while Sarah plays.  She "watches" Sesame Street, Super Why and Word World.  She doesn't just sit in from of the TV and watch, she plays and sometimes stops and watches.  But she's learned a lot from Super Why.  They spend a lot of time on letter and the sounds they make so it's pretty cool.
  • An hour every morning while we are all trying to get out the door and often times 1.5-2.0 hours in the afternoon IF she doesn't take a nap.  She has "rest" time on the couch with a movie that she chooses.  It keeps her laying down, quiet, "resting" and I am able to get some things done or rest myself.

    She's 3 1/2 years old.
