washing clothes before baby wears them

Are you going to wash all your clothes before you put them on your baby? I know it would be harder to do but would it be better for the baby?

Re: washing clothes before baby wears them

  • I have washed all the ones we have gotten so far.
  • Loading the player...
  • Yep, just finished clothes yesterday and today I will wash all the bedding and blankets! The nice thing is that almost all of a babys' clothes can fit in one load! It really is amazing!
  • Anything that he wears, I'll wash ahead of time.

But I'm not going to wash all the clothes I buy/receive as gifts before he's born.  I plan to wash a handful of stuff in NB & 0-3 before he gets here, but the rest will stay with tags on & receipts taped to them in case they don't fit or I don't need them.

  • Absolutely.  Definitely do it if you can.
  • I washed them all before DS1 was born.

  • I plan to wash the clothes before we put them on her. I may not wash all the clothes we get though. She may grow out of certain items before she has a chance to wear them.
  • Yes!  We've been having fun doing LO's laundry with the baby detergent (we got Mrs. Meyer's -- awesome).
  • I wash all clothes before they are worn--- for me, my dh, my ds, and for the new baby.

    This

  • yes, everything gets washed ahead of time;  things in bags smell funny and things that were hung...well, who know who did what do it before I bought it (on the floor, dirty hands touching it etc)

  • Definitely wash everything before they wear it. There are excess dyes and sizing in new clothes that can irritate their skin.
She's crafty - and she's just my type.

I wish I could do this, but every gift we got had the tags already off, and no gift receipt in sight.  Sigh, oh well.

  • Yes, I washed everything. The clothes and blankets. The only clothes I didn't wash were the few that are for sizes 9-12 months. I'll wash them when he gets closer to actually wearing them.

  • Yep.  I just washed them all when I was home for a snow day.  You're going to have to wash everything eventually.  Might as well wash them while you have some free time before the baby comes.
  • Yep, I've washed everything.

  • i have washed all the clothes, but I don't think its necessary or harms the baby.
  • Ditto pp's.  There are studies showing that there are all kinds of junk on textiles!

Ditto!  However, I won't wash some of the older-sized clothes that we've received until we need to use them.

  • DD #1 is almost three and I still wash everything once before she wears it. I use All free and clear. There are a lot of chemicals in new clothes. It's just part of our new routine now.
  • Everything that touches his skin has been washed--clothes, blankets, burp cloths, etc.

And it's not just the sizing and chemicals from manufacturing--it's everyone's grubby hands that have touched all those cute clothes before they're on him!  I'm not a germophobe by any means, but his clothes and blankets were SO much softer after washing.  Definite must do.

  • yup. i plan on washing them once i get enough to do a full load :) i'm using method free and clear with method baby dryer sheets!
  • Yup, I have washed them all.

  • Yes, definitely wash them in baby detergent. And depending how sensitive your baby is, the nurse might suggest (they did with us) to wash them twice.

Also, a bit off topic, but be prepared to wipe his/her little but with wet wash cloths instead of wipes. Those first few days, even the most gentle wipes can be too harsh.

  • Don't wash them all right away.  Most of them they won't even get a chance to wear and if they still have the tags on them, you can give them to people or exchange them for something else (usually in a bigger size.)

I did wash clothes before DS wore them, but only like a week in advance.

  • You should. Babies have really sensitive skin. The clothes have a special coating on them to keep them looking clean and new in the stores, and you should wash it off to keep baby's skin from getting irritated.

  • yep! everything we have so far i've washed. I wait till I get a decent amount then do a load with just her stuff in it until her skin gets used to being exposed to everything!

  • I washed all the clothes that we have and my mom washed all the clothes at her house which was like 85% of it. All baby clothes should be washed before your LO wears it.

  • I have washed all the burp clothes and linens..etc.. I've got all the newborn stuff washed and in a drawer and plan on doing the clothes in stages based on sizes. I feel like that helps me have a grip on what I have and how much I might need. Plus the sizes won't get mixed up. I might be in nesting mode and have over complicated it. lol
  • wow, out of all the responses, I'm going to be the only no.  I just don't get it.  I don't wash my clothes before I wear them, I really don't see why the baby needs hers washed.  They are new clothes, they're fine.  Any dyes or anything that go into clothes are not going to harm her.  I've never heard of a baby getting sick because she wore a new outfit.  I'll let you know though if mine will be the 1st
