Babies: 9 - 12 Months

For the sake of BOH, help me with self-feeding.

I know how redundant questions about solids, carseats, sleep and teething can be anround here.  I hate to bother everyone with it for the zillionth time, so I usually just PM BOH since I have no problem bothering her Big Smile

I thought I would give her a break today! Anyways, DD isn't too into purees (I make all her food) but goes bananas over anything she can hold and self feed. As of now I've only given her bits of steamed sweet potato that she picks up and feeds herself and a banana chunk. She gets so excited when she can pick up a piece of food and put it in her own mouth. She is interested, she tastes it, gums it, swallows, plays, and wants more. With purees...she sees the spoon coming and blows raspberries, spits it out, gets distracted and has never consumed more than 2 tbsp at most. BLW interested me but overwhelmed me. I regret not looking into it more. Any suggestions?  (and wow this got a little long!)

  • Hey mama!

I don't do BLW sorry there but...

maybe try steaming (soft) veggies and letting her self feed once they are cool. Other than that puffs or mum mum's?

    C still feeling better?

  • Bwahaha.

I just put bits of stuff on their tray (french toast, couscous, diced fruits & veggies) and let them chow down if they feel like it,

They love feeding their chests/laps as much as their mouths.

  • Ok...so you're saying if I just leave food in front of O, she'll just go to town and eat it all??? Cause she loves to spit food at me!!!

She has no teeth though! When did you start that with the boys and how did they take to it?

Until last week they had 2 teeth. They gum things. And it's still hot or miss but I had to try something once they locked up whenever a spoon came near. Sam will let me put food in his mouth with my fingers. Jake refuses to eat unless he feeds himself.

  • You can offer pretty much any steamed veggie.  Just steam it until it's soft enough for her to gum down. DS loves steamed brocoli florets.  Waffles, muffins, pancakes are also big hits for DS.  He also likes black beans.  When we do feed him purees (if DH and I are eating fast food or something else that DS can't have) I distract him with puffs or small pieces of crackers.  As long as there is something on his tray that he can pick up, he'll accept the purees too.

lol, I've mastered the swoop in-step back move when feeding.

I put about 5 little chunks of sweet potato (super steamed) on her tray and she picked them up and knew what to do. She was so happy about it too.

  • I find that BLW is quite easy because DS eats what we eat for the most part. Everything I place in front of him on the tray he'll try. This week his new foods were spinach, mango, pineapple, and sloppy joe meat.

  • Natalie loves teething biscuits. That's all I have to add to this conversation. Sorry, I know nothing about BLW.

DS would never take more than 4-5 bites of homemade baby food, so I went to BLW.  When we started his first two teeth had just poked through his gum and even now those are the only two teeth he has.  Other than occasionally biting off a hunk of something, he doesn't use his teeth.  He mashes everything with his gums.

You can offer any soft fruit or veggie, stick form is good at her age.  And when you're ready you can try noodles, toast, bagel, cheerios, meatloaf, chicken nugget, etc.

  • We do BLW as well, L hates purees sometimes I will still offer them and he cries. He had no teeth until his first two popped thru last week and he has doen great for over a month. Veggies, fruit, rice cakes with hummus, banana or avocado or yogurt on it, grilled cheese, taost, pancakes, waffles. He loves feeding himself. Just be prepared for a mess!
