BLW Check in!

Two thoughts for today:

1.  What are your go-to foods for traveling or eating away from the house?  AND/OR when you go out to eat, what do you look to order that you share with LO?

2.  What are your house rules on food that drops on the floor during mealtime:

a) 5-second rule.  We put it back on the tray and LO keeps going.

b) Rinse and Repeat. We give it a rinse and put it back on the tray.

c) Gone forever. Everything on the floor stays on the floor and is thrown away/composted.

d) Puppy Chow. With dogs it never even hits the floor.

e) other or a combination of the above :-)

Re: BLW Check in!

  • 1.  We just discovered mum mums and M is in LOVE.  I'll also throw steamed asparagus and plain cucumber sticks in my bag if needed as they aren't too messy.  We've only been out to eat once since he started solids, but I feel going out to eat will test the 80/20 healthy/junk balance for us as we have very few restaurants that serve veggie sides or any other healthy thing.

    2.  We do a combination of the first three depending on the texture of the food.  Crackers I'll often give back, veggies get a quick rinse, and anything sticky stays on the floor.  We've been keeping the dogs out of the dining area during mealtime, but they love to come in afterward and clean up : )

  • 1. We usually bring some fruit or veggies for Ari if we go to eat at someone's house. He loves any & all fruits & veggies. Since we have so many diet restricitons we no longer eat out. :( There's just no way to do it w/ all of our forbidden foods.

    2. c. Gone forever. We have a dog but he's not allowed to eat from the table nor scrounge for things on the floor.

  • We just started doing a BLW approach (mostly- I think her grandma still spoon feeds her some). So, I'm joining in!

    1. Tomorrow Emmy is going shopping with my mom while I'm at school. I'm packing her some pancakes that I cut up into strips. I made the pancakes- they have sweet potato in them and she loves them. I'm sending some Mum Mums too.

    2. Puppy chow. The dogs eat it all!

Just some general thoughts- I'm trying to just let go and not control how much she eats, but I'm having difficulty. I normally see people post that their 6 month old eats a few bites, or doesn't eat anything at all. That it is a gradual process to eating a lot of solids. Not Emmy- she chows down. Today for lunch she ate about 1/2 a pancake and probably a tablespoon or so of yogurt mixed with applesauce. She probably would have kept eating, except she dropped the rest of the pancake on the floor and I didn't give her more.

She hasn't had any problems with anything I've offered her, so I should just let it go. Oh, and how often would you offer food to a 6 month old (6 months today!!!)? Because she would eat ALL the time, and I don't want to interfere with nursing.

  • 1.  I keep mum mums in the diaper bag for emergencies.  Because of our food issues we only go to a few safe places.  We went for indian and she had some pakora, a rice donut thing, and some naan (ghee and butter don't seem to bother her).  We went for sushi and she ate the avocado out of my rolls and stole some broccoli from some soy-less teriyaki.  I have also ordered fruit salad for her.2.  We give it a rinse and put it back on the tray.  I think the tray is too small, when she's sorting she just puts food to the side and it seems to be an accident when it drops..  Throwing is a different story and she throws it directly into the dog's mouth.  This has happened more than once.  At the end of the meal the dog gets all the left overs in her dish.  The dog is not allowed to sneak around eating scraps. I have a question about sippy cups.  Is there any point to them?  I don't get it. Can I just have her drink out of a cup?   She loves cups and a sippy is just as messy for us so I am puzzled by them?  Maybe they make sense for bottle-fed babies? Sorry for the dumb question.
  • I'm joining in :)

    1. Cheerios! DS loves those. That is all he would eat if I always offered them :) I recently discovered seedless grapes (I peal the skin off an quarter them). DS loves them! We took my mom to the airport last week (2 hour drive 1 way for us) and we took a rice cake, cheerios and a baggie of grapes with us. All great non messy food and all I needed was a knife to quarter the grapes.

    2. a combination of the 1st 3 options depending on the food.

In response to the sippy cup question. A cup is even better than a sippy if DC is good about drinking out of it. DS has recently goten better wit a cup but he couldn't figure it out at 7 months. He loves to play/drink out of his sippy though and it is a tad less messy for us although we only do water and only at meals and ocassionaly when we are out to keep him occupied. The sippy works great for that. Ours is non-leak. DS almost never drinks out of a bottle so they aren't just for bottle fed babies.

  • I'm joining in as well!

    1. Nothing! LOL is that bad? I guess at this point I figure if he's hungry when we are out and about either I BF him or we will be at a restaurant where we order him salad (he loves lettuce, spinach leaves, etc) or steamed veggies, plus whatever we are eating. At home the go to "easy" food is celery sticks- a big fave, or rice cakes.

    2.  Combo. Like pp if it's "dry" he gets it back, sticky/ wet it gets tossed. It does make me wish we had a dog sometimes!

We haven't done a sippy, just small plastic cups. I did just buy a vintage tommee tippee cup that he really likes, it has a clear lid with two little slits in it. The lid sits down about a cm in the cup. I really think it's a great learning cup.

We try to order a sweet potato if it's available.  Otherwise we have gotten broccoli for her.  We're pretty new to all of this though - she's turning 7 months this week.

A, B, or C depending on what it is. :)

Hmmm . . . M sits down with us for 3 meals a day and we offer 3-4 foods at each.  However, he's settled into a pretty predictable nursing schedule that falls before each meal so I don't worry too much.  I know Em's a crazy nurser, so I'm not sure how that would work to just watch her nursing schedule and make sure she's nursing beforehand.   As long as she's leading and your offering healthy stuff, it'll be baby-led and as much as it sounds like Em likes nursing I doubt it'll be too soon Smile

M seems to "get" drinking straight from a cup better than a sippy and I'm not real eager to push it because he doesn't really *need* other liquids right now.  However, I can see the appeal of a sippy for mess factor.  When he tips a plain sippy, a few drops go all over, when he dumps the cup, I'm picking up a soggy mess on his tray :  )   We've had the most success with a regular old straw, so who knows.

  • Thanks ladies!

    I forgot to add something:

DH bought us some silicone cupcake liners to use a baby dishes.  We love them and a pack of 12 was only a few dollars.  She can bend and fold and suck on them.  She can also whip them across the rom without injury.  I think I have some photos, I'll look and post later.
