Pros & Cons of Summer Birth

As I was struggling to tie my shoes today, I thought of how nice it will be to be wearing sandals and such that I can just slip into in my final months...  And then pondered other advantages and disadvantages to summer due dates:

Pros:  Sandals (both for ease on/off and for swollen feet!); No slipping/falling on ice at 7+ months pregnant; giant t-shirts are easy to find (or steal from hubby); going out for ice cream makes more sense to non-pregnant family/friends; baby can pretty much wear onesies for his/her first few months

Cons:  HOT and sometimes miserable weather during an already uncomfortable time; summer clothes don't hide much; summer vacations are pretty much out for this year

What other pros/cons can you think of?  Is there a time of year you'd rather have a baby?  Why?

  • Maternity leave in the summer/fall months! Not cold here so baby & I can get out of the house a bit. Had DD in the summer as well and loved being able to have an excuse to wear flip flops to work! My feet were so swollen they wouldn't fit into any other shoes!
  • I went through the summer with my first and I have to say it wasn't so bad. I think we had a fairly mild summer for Boston so I was lucky there, but I was at work most days in the A/C and we hit the beach during the weekends. I loved the clothes, they didn't hide much but when you get to that point you are so uncomfortable and putting on pants is so not fun. Dresses and skirts are great as are the flowy tops and tanks.

And you have great weather for when they are small to go for walks and get out of the house, unless you live in a warm year round climate.

I have to say there were actually alot more pros' than cons for me. I didn't swell either :0

  • Pros: Lots of garage sales to buy gently used stuff, maternity clothes cheaper since you can wear sundresses and flip flops, not dealing with getting a newborn in and out of the car in the middle of winter.

Cons: We don't have hot summers or humidity here, but I guess that could be a complaint.  I love that we're having a summer baby!!

  • Pro: pretty much get the entire summer off for maternity leave!

Also not having to bundle you & baby up before leaving the house.

Con: the electric bill for running the AC unit 24 hours a day at full blast!

  • My big con is no summer vacation. I go every year with my family and I love it, but this year I am thinking it is probably not in the cards. But ultimately worth it to sacrifice and have a baby instead :)

  • Seeing as I just did this last summer:)

Pros:   ice cream, popsicles, flip flops, sun dresses, floppy hats (just because), walks outside, a summer breeze, swimming can take baby for walks right away outside

Cons: heat - but actually it's not so bad if you have air-conditioning.

  • I have definitely thought about the pro of wearing flip flops everyday in later pregnancy and I'm very excited about that.

PRO:  I'm due Jun 21 so my maternity leave will run through late Aug.  I'm excited to have the summer off!  I love summer time and can't wait to spend some out door time with LO.  :)

CON:  We have a 23' ski boat that I'm probably not going to get to spend much time on and I LOVE boating and water skiing.

  • Pro--everything everone said. For me the biggie is clothing. I am very short and have SUCH a hard time finding maternity pants. I cant wait for warmer weather so I can wear sundresses!

Cons--not feeling great in a bathing suit. Not that I was a supermodel before, but I definitely didn't worry about how I looked in a bikini. This summer, IF we even get to the beach, I'm going to feel like a whale. But, it's all worth it in the end!

  • Pro:
-For me, Hubby is home (teacher)! Although it looks like he is getting a promotion to administrator which means he'll have to work some, but that's good too :-)
-Getting to lounge in a pool if too hot!
-Getting vacations with my parents and ILs without taking time off work
    -Easy maternity clothes

    Cons:
-I hear BFing can be umcomfy because of sweatiness
-Worrying about baby staying cool enough but covered enough from the sun

  • Pro: not needing to worry about going in to labor in the middle of a snow storm!
  • pros: flip flops/sandles are more appropriate (although i wear them year round - not pregnant), sundresses, my friends are all having babies and/or teachers so we can do play dates and go eat a lot, tank tops, ice cream and more ice cream, cooking out on the grill (hubby cooks and i dont have as much to clean up), fishing, not bundling me or baby..plus summer is my favorite anyway..and I can barely drag myself out in he winter..

cons: hot - it gets pretty hot here..so being huge and hot might not be fun.

  • another con: being postpartum in the summer.....you feel so fat and gross and don't want to wear shorts/tanks etc.  one part i loved about having DD in the fall was being able to wear hoodies and long pants/sweats while i lost most of my baby weight!
  • Pros: flip flops, jersey knit dresses, not having to pack a ton clothes to cover up at the hospital, cute little summer outfits for my girls...(love summer clothes)

Cons: TEXAS HEAT! I am due June 11th, so it's won't be that bad yet but still...Summer heat! Not getting a good tan and being ghostly white all summer. YIKES!

  • Pro: Having the summer off!!! Going to the pool, beach (though sand at that point probably won't be fun), BBQ and cookouts, fireworks, sandals and summer maternity clothes are WAY cuter than winter ones, my bestie can come from Austin and my other bestie comes back from Madrid!, frappachinos

Con: Houston is hot, humid, and miserable, and that's when you aren't pregnant...need I say more?

If I were in almost any other state (sorry FL) then summer would be PERFECT...ie Cali, TN, Ohio....just to name a few

not dealing with getting a newborn in and out of the car in the middle of winter.

I live in las vegas, and getting a newborn in and out of the car in mid july/august is going to be a b**ch. I'm going to have to hire someone to go start my car for me to cool it off, I can't stick my newborn in a car that's been baking in 120degree heat for the past hour while I shopped at the mall!

"Karma1969: If baking someone a birthday pie/cake is romantic, I must be a slut."
  • I live in Central Florida -- there aren't that many pros for an August birth.

I would love to hibernate indoors in the a/c beginning May 31 and not lurk out until the baby gets here.  Sadly, not an option Stick out tongue

  • My biggest con is that my DH works construction and that is the bussiest time of year for him and he works long hours, so he won't be home very often. Oh, and my sisters graduation is 3 weeks before my due date and I will have to sit in a hot gym full of people on hard bleachers for like 3-4 hours.

  • I am already stocking up on flip flops, tanks, and dresses. Summers here are outrageously humid so I know I will be hot. However, I am freezing cold all the time so I am looking forward to some warmth.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Pros - you look like everyone else that's hot. More hours of daylight to take LO outside. No bulky blankets or snowsuits. Reduce chances of cabin fever

Cons - More visitors stopping by to see the baby just because they were out enjoying the weather. Having to hold a baby when you feel hot and sticky.

I prefer the fall. My pregnancy started in the winter so I was able to cover up the initial bloat the timeframe that you look fat instead of pregnant, in the summer I could get away with wearing less clothers and in the fall the weather is still nice without being scorching hot.

  • I am SO glad I am having a summer baby (for all the pros that were already listed) but one big CON:  I don't think I will be able to do the summer hiking I love.  Maybe I'll give it a shot, but climbing a mountain out of cell range doesn't seem like a good idea.

  • I can think of the best con!!! No work for 2 Months! Which means I get my entire summer off! That is better than almost anything.  After a few weeks we can go out walking, go to the park.  Get the most out of the beautiful summer days that we usually miss when we are in the office! What do you think?

    Lilypie Third Birthday tickers
  • We don't have air conditioning. I am going to hate life during those months.
  • My biggest pro is for my child: having a summer birthday. As someone who has a winter birthday (and so does dh) around Christmas time, it sucks. I'm so happy my kid will have a summer b-day.

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Pros: The baby will be born into a warm environment, don't need to worry about him/her being cold. Don't have to worry about getting stuck on the way to the hospital because of bad weather, not only for L&D but for the many followup appointments for the newborn.

Cons: Being hot and pregnant can be uncomfortable. Can't think of anything else...summer in Northern California is just beautiful! Picnics in the park, pool parties, bbqs at twilight...woohoo!

  • I have a lot more cons because I live in Florida where it's like 100 degrees in the summer, however it's my favorite time of year.

My cons are:  Mosquitos are horrible in the summer, the threat of a hurricane with a new baby is a lot different than a hosting a hurricane party, our annual Key West vacay is a no-go at nine months preggo, we will have to start the car and cool it down before we can even put baby in the carseat, anything metal (car seat buckles) will burn his skin if it touches him, no cute VS bikini's for me this summer Sad

The pros?  A beautiful baby boy who will make all of the above worth it.  Also, the rain and heat make for a good reason to stay home with him and not feel like I am missing out on beautiful weather.

  • PRO - I'll be able to enjoy a beer in July and August at BBQs!  (Due 6/23)

    Big Smile

  • Pro:  No worry about winter blues and post-partum-ness coinciding.   I get very blah in the late winter.

Sorry if this is a re-post.. I didn't read all the responses.

  • Pro: I won't be wearing a huge jacket, so people will be able to see that I'm pregnant and hopefully will give me a seat on the subway. Now I see women in huge coats and it's hard to tell if they're actually pregnant (some are at the OB so I KNOW they are, but you can hardly tell with the coat on.)

Ditto. My daughter was born in December in Ohio. I just wanted to take her on a walk in her new stroller and get out of the house (the malls were too crowded), and it wasn't easy to walk outside because it was kind of hard with 3 feet of snow.

  • i specifically did not want a winter baby, for the sole reason of it being winter and how much i absolutely hate winter. we did plan to get pregnant, and at the time I was student teaching, and i wanted to start trying at the end of my semester at school because i assumed it'd take a little to happen. it happened right away and i finished student teaching right when i started to get sick. lucky me. i remember sitting around with my husband thinking of the better time to plan to get pregnant, and my issue was being able to wear sundresses and enjoy the springtime being visibly pregnant. my husband didn't care, he just wanted to get pregnant. so... my pros & cons are:

pros: sundresses & sandals, an early summer shower, i'm a teacher so i'm off work anyway, air conditioning, beautiful weather, beach going, fun bathingsuits, not having to bundle up to go outside with the baby as much, being able to go on walks in the mornings

cons: my kid will have a joint birthday party with the other summer babies in school which always seemed like a bummer, humidity & late summer hotness, no surfing for me (i'm an avid surfer and spend 3 seaons doing so), the air conditioner for my husband (he's always cold. he will freeze. oh well.)

  • Cons: newborns overheat so easily.  It is much easier to help them regulate their temp in the winter, because you can keep adding layers.  You can't help a baby who's already naked but for a diaper too much.

ETA: WHen I gave birth on June 19, it had already been over 110' F where I live, and I never swelled one tiny bit.  It can be avoided if you drink tons and tons of water.

    Oooh that's a BIG pro!
  • Well Since I'm due mid june...

Con: Legs will never be perfectly shaven before then!  It's tricky now so I cover them

Pro: yup flip flops... Hopefully after the baby I can find some cute tops and empire waist sundresses to hide the soft belly!

I have 3 graduations to go to before im due in Aug and in most schools if the graduate talks to someone, they can usually get you a special seating where you have a real chair instead of a bench and theres sometimes fans and water available there.  I had to do that for my HS grad for my grandparents and luckily my pg cusin was able to sit with them also. She said she wouldnt have made it through on those pack benches with the rest of the famz.

You could ask about that.  hopefully that helps!

  • Pros: I can go on vacation with my LO every year for his/her birthday.

Cons: LO won't be able to carry around balloons at school all day because of his/her birthday.
