Entertain me...

Hypothetically, let's say you were in a location with a newborn until about 3 months of age then would be moving (long distance) and not wanting to lug around a bunch of items that are not yet necessary. What would you recommend as far as baby products? Could one get by with just a carrier (Moby Wrap), no stroller? A small stash of CDs? Does a newborn car seat last a long time?

So, what are the basics that are necessary for the first 1-4 months? More likely up to 3 months.

Re: Entertain me...

  • Hypothetically, hmmm? What are you not telling us? :)

Carrier. I think you could absolutely get by with just a carrier and no stroller. If you don't know any differently, you won't miss the stroller!

Diapers. Yep, I think you'd be fine with just a small stash of CDs, but it also depends on how often you want to wash.

Car seat. Infant seats last usually until at least 22 pounds, but more and more are going up to 30, 32, or even 35 pounds now. Ella, for example, is still in her infant seat and she's almost 28" and 17+ lbs at 7 months. It seems like most people don't move to a convertible seat until 6m+. Then again, you can use a convertible seat from day one - especially if you're not going to get a stroller frame (like a snap-n-go).

For me the only major necessities were a carrier, car seat, diapers and clothes. I mean, there were eleventy billion other products that I claimed I couldn't live without but if it came down to it, I certainly could have gone without.

  • DS and I camped out in my old room for 6 months at mom and dads while the house was selling and DH lived in a hotel here in FTW while he looked for us a house.

Agree with pp but would add...swaddling blankets (miracle blankets were a must for us), a boppy, a baby crack machine (homedics sound machine esp. if you're in a small space with others around), a PNP if you don't do a crib or somewhere LO can sleep (we used the By My Side chair by Bright Starts for DS) and some sort of rocking chair.

Those were our lifesaver items.  It was hard but if you're going to do it, that's the time.  Newborns are much easier to camp out with than a toddler!!!

  • -A place for baby to sleep (bassinett or pack&play) would be fine for that age

-Stroller definitely not necessary, but a Moby or a sling is a must IMO

-We don't CD, so I can't help you there

-T is still in his infant carseat and he's almost 10 months old.  He won't be for much longer though because he's almost outgrown it in length.

-Our swing was a necessity, but it isn't for others.

-SwaddleMes were a necessity for us as well

  • -place to sleep (you could even opt for a PNP and get a crib later)

-stroller is not necessary for the first 3 months - I used mine a lot but you could substitute with a sling, although if you got a frame (and you already have the car seat) it wouldn't be THAT big

-some kind of carrier or sling

-ditto pp on the car seat

-we rarely used our swing but it depends on the baby

     that's about it

  • Thanks for the responses ladies! Don't worry Lauren, I'm not hiding anything. Just getting info hopefully for the future.
