I have found so many things that I want to make for C so I have decided to get a sewing machine. I can sew by hand and my grandmother taught me to sew on her machine (which I inherited) but it is an antique and 1) is very hard to thread/use and 2) I am afraid to break it.
So, what is a good machine for a beginner? I don't need one with a million stitches programmed or any embroidery options. I also have an Amazon giftcard, so if it's one I can get from there, even better. Thanks!
Re: NBR: Rec your sewing machine
I really like my brother machine and they are very easy to use and heavy duty machines.

I'm so glad you asked this--I'm in the market for one, too! I was going to add that a good friend of mine who sews says that Brother is a good brand to go with.

Ditto Brother machines. I have two and like them both.
The first is similar to this one (I think this is just a newer model), and it's simple to use, handles quilting okay, and has a button-holer:

The one I have now is this one, and I actually bought it refurbished from Overstock so it was about $100 cheaper than Amazon:

I absolutely love it. It is super super simple, and it's a lot quieter than the other one, which means I can sew during naptime or while DH is watching TV. It also has a lot more stitches and the computerized features just make it a lot easier to use.
Here's another one that supposed to be really good:

I had a Singer and HATED it. It completely sucked. It was the middle-of-the-road model. Not the most expensive, but not the starter machine either. Its motion was not very good at all and even with adjusting the level of the presser foot and feed teeth, it was hard to get even thin cotton through the feed.
I traded it in for a Husqvarna Viking, and I like it very much.

The Kenmore ones at Sears are really good. They are the same machines as some of the "big names" at a lower price since they aren't branded. I believe the one I have is the same as the Janome.
If you ask on the Crafts board, I'm sure you will get some great recommendations as well. A lot of those ladies are heavy sewers.
