Smug people suck: buying alcohol while pregnant

I am hosting a dinner party for my husband's birthday this weekend, not that it matters as people have the right to buy what they want. At the grocery store last night I decided to save myself an extra trip and pick up the wine, beer and alcohol needed for the party. The couple behind me in the check out line start a rather loud conversation about the effects of alcohol on a fetus. The cashier asks me do you hear that? I reply "why yes I do but choose not to engage in a conversation or justify what I purchase with random strangers at the grocery store". The lady behind them started clapping.

I never in a lifetime realized how much interest strangers take in what pregnant woman buy, eat and do.

This post made me laugh because I have had this happen. I bought some wine and beer for the Superbowl party I was hosting at my house and people looked at me like I had snakes coming out of my head. Stupid idiots.

I was like "Actually, my OB, you know, the one that went to med school, said it's fine in moderation".

How rude of them to presume you were buying it for yourself to go get wasted. I'll admit I feel kind of weird buying beer for DH when I'm shopping, but no one has ever had the gaul to say anything to me.

Your response was right on though. I probably would have said something to the store manager about how the cashier involved him/herself in the inappropriate conversation.

Ugh, that's horrible. People around me are either very polite, or just don't care - or I am completely oblivious - because I can't tell you how often I've gone out for sushi and no one even bats an eye. Heck, one day I ordered a virgin pina colada (everyone was drinking and I couldn't stand it) and not a dirty look from anyone. I even sat at the bar LOL.

I bought the beer for Super Bowl Sunday and I too got side glances. Some idiot man gave me a drive by comment as he passed me in the aisle "you're going to get drunk" to which I replied "yea that's right!! Woo hoo!" A-holes!

Ugh. This has happened to me as well. Just last week DH asked me to pick up a red bull for him on my way to lamaze class b/c he didn't have time to stop & get one himself. The cashier made some rude comment about how my baby doesn't want wings.

I simply cannot understand why people think it's ok to judge/say things to a pregnant woman, just because she's pregnant. I feel like we walk around wtih a huge bullseye on our backs!

Almost this exact thing happened to me! We were on a road trip and DH wanted me to get him a Red Bull while he used the restroom at the gas station. When I brought it up to the counter the cashier gave me this really condescending look and ask snidely "Is this for you?". Just then DH walked up behind me so I turned around and said "Here's YOUR Red Bull, honey." while handing it to him. It shut her up.

I was in Starbucks ordering a decaf mocha and the lady infront of me needed to tell me that even decaf has caffiine in it...Oh really? No $&*$! I swear I will never know why people feel they need to "educate" pregnant women about what they should have and not have...mind your own business!

Just last weekend DH and I took the kids to the bowling allley and while he was in the arcade with them, I went to the bar to get DH a beer and to get some change for the games. I ordered the beer, the bartender says, "way to be a good mom, drinking while pregnant". To which I kindly responded, "I'm not pregnant, I'm just overweight". Obviously not true, but she certainly shut her ignorant mouth.

I would have played it up and said "GEEZE I am thirsty...DO you guys have any cups?.." I would love to see the look on their faces then!! I bought my husband beer the other night at the gorcery store and looked at the cashier and was like "HMMM I forgot to ask my husband if he wanted anything" Lol!!! (I shop at that store daily so they were cracking up)

When people do this, its not that its rude that annoys me. Its the lack of logical thinking skills. I don't understand why people seem to not comprehend that a pregnant woman could be buying alcohol yet not plan to drink it.

Our company recycles coke cans. So today I brought in an empty coke can that my husband drank last night. Some lady looked at me and asked if I should be drinking coke while pregnant. I just rolled my eyes at her and kept walking.
