Midwife Referrals?

Hi All.

I'm new to this board.  Just got my BFP this weekend!  I am trying to do some research into whether to use an OB or a midwife.  I currently live just outside of NYC, and I'd ideally like to deliver in NJ (rather than the city).  Does anyone know of any good Midwives in the northeastern NJ area?  Thanks!

Re: Midwife Referrals?

  • Are you in Bergen county? I heard some great things about the midwives out Pascak Hospital.

If you don't mind traveling there is a wonderful midwife in Denville (very easy to get to right off route 80) named Marla Scott. She delivers at St Clares

  • I am using Avalon (they have a website).  There are 4 midwives in the practice, and they have back-up doctors just in case.  I have been happy so far with the level of care. They are very laid back, which fits my personality.  I will be delivering at Morristown Memorial..I don't know how far that is from you, but I have heard great things from Avalon and Morristown through various doulas and natural birth coaches.  Most people operate based on fear when it comes to childbirth, and don't give enough credit to modern day obstetrics.  I don't believe in putting blind faith in a obgyn just because they are a doctor...I also did my research, so it's smart that you are looking at all your options and choosing what is right for YOU. Good luck!
  • I'm also with Avalon.  My friend recommended them to me, and she was happy with them.  I'm still early on, but I dealt with them through some complications and they were wonderful.
  • Thanks everyone!  I came across Avalon too, and they look great.  I would LOVE to deliver at Morristown, but I am worried it might be a bit too far from us.  We're in North Bergen right now, which is about an hour from Morristown, but we're hoping to move to Clifton within the next 6 months.  So that would be at  leat a bit closer to Morristown.

Does anyone know if there's a waiting list for Avalon?  The only reason I'm even worrying about this so early is that I've heard midwives often have a waiting list.  Thanks for all the info!

  • The first time I called them was in December, and there was no wait list.  Since then I haven't had much trouble getting appointments at the time I want, and the wait is never crazy long.

  • I called them the day I got my BFP and they took me in that day!  They are also open on Saturdays in Morristown, which is great.  I've never had to wait longer than 10 minutes or so, and they are good about appts. Once they had written down the wrong day for my appt. in their book.  I didn't even have to show them my appt. card which confirmed I WAS supposed to be there.  They just took me in--no problems.  The only thing to be careful with there is make sure you are covered for labwork through QUEST diagnostics on your insurance.  Otherwise, you may have to go through LABCORP. and you may need to do that somewhere else, I am not sure.
