DE pedi indicted in child sex abuse scandal

What I would like to know is under what circumstances would a 2-year-old be alone in a room with a dr (the children were patients of his and the abuse happened at his office)?  It seems like it was commonplace in this practice.

A Delaware pediatrician is accused of sexually assaulting more than 100 girls and one boy. Authorities charged Dr. Earl Bradley with 471 total counts of child abuse and say he videotaped the attacks.

Re: DE pedi indicted in child sex abuse scandal

  • My sister and I were wondering the same thing.  I wouldn't leave my child alone with a Dr....what was the reason?  How did he get the parents to let them be alone?  Makes me so sick to my stomach.

  • I heard a tidbit of this story on the radio and couldn't understand how it was possible.

So so scary.  I can't imagine any reason for ever leaving your child alone.

  • That is a crazy and sick situation.

From my understanding, there were MANY allegations, etc brought up and i don't know how anyone didn't do anything.

I practice in Delaware, and my DH is actually a pedi in Delaware (but we are upstate, and this occurred downstate--where i things are more rural and there are not many docs).  All health care professionals were issued letters from the State Board saying that if anyone knows of any of these situations going on ie, if you are a nurse and suspect the doc, etc.  it would be a crime against you not to report anything.

So i am thinking that a lot of people suspected stuff, and nothing was done.  It is such a shame.  I have no idea how this stuff went on without parents, etc. getting suspicious.  But like i said, it was not in an urban area, so maybe the parents were just not educated enough to realize what was going on.

  • That is horrible! But I agree, I dont understand what a doctor could say to me that would allow me to leave my child alone with him/her. The only time Brady has ever been with a doctor when I was not there was when he got his tubes and I wasnt allowed in the OR while they were placed.

Either way, the blame isnt on the parents...this man is a monster!

Oh my gosh, of course!!!  In no way did I mean to blame the parents, I was honestly just trying to think of a scenario where a parent would be discouraged from accompanying the child.

Anyway, I didn't say it in the my OP but like all of you, I am just so upset and appalled at this story.

Wow, that's really interesting.  So sad when people suspect but don't feel comfortable saying anything...it happens all the time in all kinds of situations, though.  I guess it's pretty hard being the whistle-blower.

I heard on NPR last night that 40-something new abuse cases happened during the last year while he was under investigation.  Nice.

    Ugh

I think he was respected by the community because it was a small beach community (though it is growing significantly) with very few pedis.  I know that my DH never heard of him before, and he wasn't involved in any of the pediatric societies that my DH belongs too--but upper and lower delaware can be like two different worlds.

I also just heard that his fellow co-workers or pedis also knew what was going on, and they used to call him "the pediphile"......

I just can't fathom how this all occurred.  I really can't.  I can't imagine this going on for so long and so many children involved.  I think the State Board is going to really take some heat on this one.

  • Awful - unthinkable - horrific.  Evil.

To me, what resonates about this story is just because someone is a doctor - or a pediatrician - does not mean they are above reproach or someone you have to blindly trust.  I'm sure he told well meaning parents he always examined kids alone and that was the way it was done and they felt too intimidated by his being the child and healthcare "expert" to question it.  This is an extreme case ... but for me ... I am thrilled when I find healthcare providers I really like and connect with - but I don't trust anybody 100 percent when it comes to my child.

    Wheee!

  • My DH and I were talking about this last night.  I am beyond shocked at how this was handled by the authorities.

On top of that, this was a small community, right?  Word had to have gotten around...people talk...that's just the way it is in small towns.  These parents never heard people call him 'the pedophile'?  I don't buy it.

On top of that, I would NEVER allow my child to be examined without me present...never, ever ever.  I didn't want to allow Caroline's spinal tap to be done without me there...but the nurse was someone I had worked with very closely and trusted without question.

I don't know one doctor who will examine a child alone...most male physicians in this area will NOT examine an adult female without a nurse present.

This situation is beyond my belief...just unfathomable...those poor, poor kids.
