Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding & Biting!!

Is there anything I can do about my lo biting me?  She is biting me now EVERY time she breastfeeds.  Yes, she is teething, but she was doing it even after she had just gotten two teeth and no new ones were in sight.

I am about ready to quit, since I really don't know if I wanted to do it this long!

If I do quit, can she go to Vitamin D milk?  I really don't want to try to do formula for less than 2 months until she is a year old to use regular milk.

TIA!

Re: Breastfeeding & Biting!!

  • DD bit me twice - bad!  Once with her bottom 2 teeth alone and yesterday with all 4.  Both times I jumped and screamed a little and that really seemed to shock her into stopping because she didn't do it again.  It wasn't a plan, I was so shocked that I just jumped and yelled out.  Yesterday when she got me with all 4 teeth, after a jumped I did the No routine and she just smiled and giggled at me - the little stinker :)
    good luck!

Thanks - yes, this is what Isabelle does...as if it is funny to see mommy in pain!  yikes - and it hurts bad too.  She has bit me so hard that it has bled...don't know what to do!

OMG Em has never drawn blood!  It was the jumping/screaming that freaked her out - oh and both times that ended the nursing session.  Maybe give that a try - as soon as she bites you are done for the session?
    Good luck!!

  • I read on either the LLL website or the Kellymom (don't remember where) that you should sternly tell them "no" and then end the feeding.  Supposedly LO will figure it out pretty quick.  I honestly haven't tried it bc my DD doesn't have teeth yet (I came across that while looking for something else).  Good luck
  • Another tip is to pull the baby close into you as if you are going to smother them in your boob- they have to open their mouth... it's hard when your natural reaction is to yank away- but that's a baaaaad idea if they still have your nipple!

One question... have you recently started using a hard spout no spill sippy cup?  I have known of many babies who developed an awful bite habit (or a sudden change in their nursing that leaves teeth marks) because of the combo of the hard spout and hard suck required to work those things.  Removing the no-spill stopper is the fix.

  • Hmm...yes, she drinks from a sippy cup, but has been using it for awhile now and has been using it before all the biting happened.
