x/p talk to me about ECV's

Anyone ever had one?

My LO is breech.  I was given instructions to lay with my butt elevated two times a day for 10 minutes, which i will definitely give a shot in hopes that she will turn.  If that does not work, my doctor will talk to me about ECV at my next appt.  I have to admit that the risks scare me a little bit.  I would like to avoid a c-section if possible though....

thoughts?

Re: x/p talk to me about ECV's

  • I just had an ECV on the 8th.  Sadly it didn't work, and I ended up with a c/s anyway.  My OB will only them in the OR after 38 weeks in case there is a problem.

For me the epi didn't work so I felt everything.  It was quite painful.  He tried 3 different times.  Once clockwise, then counter, then clockwise again.  I was amazed be the force he used.  LO was constantly  monitored, and her heartrate never changed.

I did the inversions, hot and cold, music, and acupuncture.  Nothing would make her budge.  She was super high up and a complete Frank Breech.

I have looked at the pictures my DH took during the version, and they are pretty neat.

Good luck.  As for the c/s. I cried for days about the whole c/s possibility, but it didn't turn out as bad as I thought it was going to be.  It wasn't as easy as my 2 previous vaginal deliveries, but it wasn't horrible either.

thanks for sharing your experience :-)

  • My little man wasn't transverse breech, just upside down, but I had a successful version and here's a repost of my experience.  Honestly, I feel like versions really get a bad rap on this board, but if you have had a vaginal birth before, and you are otherwise a "good candidate" it has less risk than a c section.  My Dr. was great and I ended up having a vaginal delivery at 38w3d.

     Had my Version this morning...

    -->

at 37w1d and it worked!  Had to share my very positive experience because I know a lot of people are kinda wary of the ECV.

Went in to L&D for a NST at 11:00, just laid around and rested for 45 minutes or so, baby's heart rate was perfect so we went to Ultrasound for the actual procedure.  The version itself took no more than a minute and a half.  Baby has been sitting straight up and facing forward for a long time (months) and I was not holding out hope that they'd be able to coax him to move (he felt like he was crammed under my ribs) but the possibility of not having a C/S was worth it to me to give it a try.  My Dr. had said I was a good candidate because of the baby's size and the fact that I have had 2 vaginal deliveries.

My Dr. checked baby's position via ultrasound, put one hand on his head and another on his butt and turned him counter clockwise like he meant it!  It was painful, like someone poking you hard through your skin, applying pressure and pushing, not letting go. I squeezed hubby's hand and winced, but it was NOT unbearable. It was actually amazing.  Hubby said he could see the whole baby move through my skin. I was shocked that it went so fast, they don't "massage" the baby to move as I imagined, they push him!  As soon as he was flipped the pressure in my chest was alleviated and I even look different/more compact.  I will have bruises for sure (edit- I never ended up bruising), but I feel like I can make it through the next few weeks now, I am so much more comfortable.

Long story short, Dr. told me the risks were very low, I was monitored before and after and I'll be taking it slow for the next few days.  Baby is moving and kicking and heart rate went right back to normal.  It was a good experience and I feel great (and relieved).  Just wanted to share my good experience.
  • I had an ECV with my DD 2.5 yrs ago.  We learned she was breech around 35 wks and had the version at 37 wks.  The doctor who did the procedure was known to be the best around for doing ECVs. I wanted to give the version a try before just agreeing to the c/s.  They did not give me an epi or anything and it was somewhat painful but nothing that awful. My doctor told me that babies either turn fairly easy or they don't turn. Nonetheless, my baby did not turn.  I was crampy afterwards that night but had no pain beyond the procedure itself except for bad cramping pain where the dr pushed the hardest later on that night.
  • I had a successful ECV 2 days after my due date.  She was transverse breech.  It hurt like a mo' fo', I just did deep breathing and focused on having a vaginal delivery.

  • I just wanted to add that I have seen several posts by people who say how dangerous the ECV is, but my OB said if done correctly there is very little risk.  But my OB was very specific about the precautions that he uses, like doing it in the OR ready to do a c/s if something happens.

I was heart broken that it didn't work, and honestly my OB was a bit shocked it didn't.  He kept telling me that since LO kept trying to turn on her own, that she might just need a "helping hand."
