Daycare $

So DH and I are trying to prepare the best we can for when we become parents. We are getting rid of debt, saving money and watching closely what we spend. Since we don't know how long it will take for us to conceive once we start trying we think it's best to prepare ourselves with time. So yesterday we started making a list of possible expenses to give us an idea of what we can expect. That brought up daycare. I had no idea how much that would be do so today I asked a co worker. She told me she pays $850 a month for daycare. I almost fell back when she told me this. I'm hoping that it's that expensive only because it's in downtown near all the offices. So it's convenient therefore pricey. So now I turn to you ladies. What is the average price for a daycare?

Re: Daycare $

  • My daughter is in a liscensed family home daycare & I pay $120 a week which includes all meals & snacks. I saw centers that charge as much as $275 a week. It's smart to think about these things in advance. Kids are expensive!

  • Most places I priced out around me were about $200/week
  • Places I looked at varied from $135-$200 per week but for the most part you get what you pay for. There are some exceptions to this but overall that is the bottom line.

  • I know where my son goes (Creative Child) i'ts 1020 a month for the infants. I pay 390 for two weeks now that he's in the toddler room.

  • The one I was considering in Tamarac is $800 monthly for infants and sadly, I was not impressed with the place.

  • Mikey is at a center. His old daycare which was at my office at work was only $100 a week but it was subsidized by my company so that's why it was so cheap. The center he's at now is $212.50 a week for full-time but that includes lunch and snacks. To me its well worth it especially after some of the others that I had seen.
  • The only one I liked, Granada Day School (in Coral Gables) was $515 a month if your child was picked up at 1 p.m., and then it was $3 an hour for every additional hour they stayed past 1.

  • I too live in tamarac...

After some research and threats to resign

I ended up changing from full time work to part work (3rd shift)

I couldnt fathom paying $1000-$1500 per month for the daycares I actually liked. (there really wasnt any) I figured I could be my childrens best teachers and believe me after some of the places I saw, I am very happy with my situation.

I understand not everyone can make the choice I did but if I were to do it all over again I would have figured out how to save $$ to STAY hom 100%.

I admire those women that must work and have to deal with daycare droppoff's, pickup, managing your time to effectively manipulate your day.

WITH DAYCARE BEING SOO EXPENSIVE, I am almost convinced a nanny in the home might be a better option at this point in the game

    JUST my opininon...

  • I pay $180 a week for 3 full days, plus $15 a month for webcam access.

Also, if you are planning and looking at expenses don't forget about Insurance, I was surprised that is almost $50 a week to insurance DD.

  • Thanks ladies. I knew daycare was expensive but I never thought it would be an average of $800 a month. Yikes. I guess I was living in a fantasyland. But its good that I know this now so we can plan accordingly.

  • I wanted to add too the cost of a center vs. in home care will skew the numbers.  You can typically get home care cheaper than at a center; it's just what you are comfortable with.

Oh, and infant care for my center would have been 240 a week; it gets cheaper as they get older.

  • I was paying $800/month, now they pro-rated it for me since I only work 3 days per week

  • The infant room at our place is $795 for the school day : 8:30 to 3:30.  Before and aftercare is extra at $5/hour but only up to a cap of $100/mo.  So you can have care from 7:15 to 6pm for $895.  Yup, it ain't cheap, and you bring your kid's food, too.  The price goes down for the toddler room ($710) and then you can pay extra for lunch.
