Which hospital did you/will you deliver at and why?

Just curious if people feel certain hospitals' birth centers are better than others or what your reasoning for picking one over another comes down to. If you've had your child, were you happy with the hospital you chose?

Re: Which hospital did you/will you deliver at and why?

  • I delivered at Region's in St. Paul, and will again. I've known several people who've had various surgeries and procedures there, so I felt very comfrortable with them. That is the hospital my clinic delivers at, and even though I now live in Apple Valley, I didn't want to switch clinics, so in the end, I had to anyway. Once I knew I had to have a c/s, it sealed the deal for me.

I was VERY happy with Region's and would definitely recommend them. But, I have no experience at any other, so I can't really compare.

  • I delivered at Regions because it was free. I will not go back.

For our next I will either be at a free standing birth center or at woodwinds.

  • We will be delivering at Fairview Ridges because it's closest to home & will make it easier for SO to care for our pets that way.

  • My clinic was associated with Regions and St. Johns.  I chose Regions because it was closer to home and they let us tour (St. Johns wouldn't at the time due to H1N1).  I had a great expeirence there and will for sure deliver there again.

  • I've heard good things about St. Joseph's. I read that they have around an 11% c-section rate as opposed to the national average of 30%. This statistic is a huge recommendation in my mind.

  • St. John's.  Overall, a really good experience there when I deliver DS.  The staff was great and very helpful.  They just finished a remodel in the last year, so I'm excited to see the changes.

St. John's is the primary hospital that my clinic (Partners) goes to.  If for some reason they are full, they bump to Woodwinds.  (And from what I hear, Woodwinds bumps to St.Johns.  They reassured me this usually happens only 2-3 times a year.) Choosing the doctor was more important to me than the hospital.

  • I  delivered at Fairview southdale because it was so close to my house plus I was born there so that just added to it. I had a great time
  • I delivered at Fairview Lakes and LOVED it!  I am a Fairview employee so the two closest were either Lakes or Riverside.  The location of Riverside makes parking horrible, plus they are doing construction which makes parking even more difficult.  We chose Lakes and were not disappointed.  We had great care and felt like we were not just a number.  There were only 3 other families in the birth center when we were there.  My only complaint was that I wasn't put into the bigger room across the hall, but evidently there was someone in that room the night I had DS but they left the next day so it sat empty.  We will go there again, unless I decided to do a VBAC, then I would have to go to Riverside.

  • I delivered at St Joe's once before and will again. It is where my doctor delivers so unless I was willing to switch doctors, I didn't have a choice. I did have a good experience there and will go back without hessitation. I love my doctor and would deliver wherever he practiced.

My theory on St Joe's low c-section rate is that it is mostly primary physicians that are delivering there. The OBs all tend to deliver at St Johns and Woodwinds so a majority of pre-planned c-sections would be scheduled at those two hospitals.

  • I delivered at St. Francis, I had the choice between there and Fairview Ridges. St. Francis was closer so we went with them. I have nothing but great things to say. It was a WONDERFUL experience!!!
  • My OB only delivered at FV Southdale and I had a great experience there.
  • I delivered at Ridgeview in Waconia.  They just opened a new birth center in July and that was where my OB delivers.  I had originally switched to a Dr in Shakopee (St Francis) since that is where I live, but ended up hating my new Dr and switched back.  They did a GREAT job in Waconia and I would recommend them to anyone.  It didn't even feel like a hospital.  The suites were amazing!  Jacuzzis in the delivery suites and rainfall showers in the postpartum suites!  Surround sound speakers for your iPod, flat screen TVs and DVD players in each room...  The food wasn't even that bad!  Also, I didn't even know anyone else was on the floor with me, the rooms were insulated that well!
  • I delivered at Woodwinds and will be doing so this time around.  The main reason is because I live in Woodbury so it's close to my home.  I had a great experience there though and they really do have a nice set up.

The only downside for me was that their Special Care Nursery only takes babies 36 weeks and up.  Since Harper came at 35 weeks she was transferred to St. Johns and so was I.  I had a good experience there as well but Woodwinds was estically more pleasing.

With all this being said, I think the important thing to determine is where you OB delivers.  I think the nursing staff really makes the delivery and post partum experience but you basically get what you get and hope for great nursing staff.

  • Buffalo Hospital :-)

The biggest out of the two closest hospitals and I sorta knew the anesthesiologists there!

I had a good experience there.

  • I had the opportunity to choose between Woodwinds and Regions and I chose Regions after I had a couple people who didn't have positive experience's with Woodwinds.  I can't rave enough about Regions.  Their newly remodeled L & D was great.  The MW I had was awesome and really listened to me and my needs, and it was very nice to only have her my DH and one other nurse in the delivery room, I didn't feel like people were constantly coming and going.
  • Fairview Northland.  I choose it because it was the closest hospital.  I went there with both kids and I loved that there were only a few people there and high security.
  • Woodwinds and I loved it!!!!!!

  • Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. I really debated between there, St. Francis and Methodist. I didn't feel very connected to my OB so based on recommendations from friends and co-workers I went to Western OB and they deliver at Ridgeview. I also do some on call at Ridgeview and know the staff is awesome. I loved our experience! The new rooms are beautiful and again the staff was great. I also loved that through Western you have a 1 in 7 chance of your MD delivering your baby, not the 1 in 52 chance I have heard about elsewhere. Plus it was close to home!
  • I will be going to United.

  • Lakeview, Stillwater. Loved it because i did a waterbirth. I love Stillwater Medical Group.
  • I delivered DS1 at Fairview Riverside and DS2 at Mercy.

My experiences at both were very positive. I went to the FV midwives for DS1 and John Eads was my favorite midwife. Very cool guy. For DS2 my doctor was (and still is for my other OB/GYN needs) Ron Gourneau and I can't say enough about him. Great man, very professional, very friendly, and super nice.

  • I will be delivering at the new Maple Grove hospital.  It looks really nice and my doctor is highly recommending it.

  • I delivered at Ridgeview Waconia because we were planning on doing a waterbirth.  We went to the midwives at Western Obgyn (Chaska and Waconia).   The midwives, nurses, and doctors were wonderful.  The labor room and recovery rooms are newly remodeled---so spacious and nice!
  • I delivered at St John's the first time and will do so again with this baby. I had a great experience there and look forward to seeing the changes from the recent remodel. There are a couple other hospitals closer to home, but I fell in love with my Dr and since she delivers at St John's, that's where we went. For all the time you spend with the Dr vs at the hospital, the Dr relationship is more important to me.

  • Abbott NW in Minneapolis because that was the only hospital my OB delivered at.  The staff was great, but the rooms/food/neighborhood were all terrible.  Also, they were not supportive of natural birth options, and I felt frustrated with this.  Next time will be at Maple Grove!
  • North Memorial because they have a Level 3 NICU. We loved everything about the place.
  • I will deliver at Fairview Southdale Hospital b/c that is where my OB delivers at.

  • Maple Grove Hospital.  Its close (7 minutes away) and that's where my doctor delivers at.

We took the tour about a month ago and loved it.

I had an emergency surgery at Mercy in C.Rapids last year and had a bad experience so I knew I didn't want to deliver there even though its probably a few minutes closer for us.

  • I'm super late, but here's my two cents...

I delivered at United. My choice was United or Woodwinds (for where my doctor would deliver) and United is closer to home so we went with that. Thank God.

My son had a stroke and stopped breathing at birth, and experienced severe damage to his major organs. All completely unexpected after a routine, easy labor that turned into a c-section due to failure to progress after pushing 2.5 hours.

Children's NICU neurologists were in the OR before I even knew what was happening and saved my son's life. Being right at a top level NICU greatly reduced my son's brain damage as they had a new cooling treatment most don't. He wouldn't have survived a transport from Woodwinds.

Just something to keep in mind...hopefully you will never need to use it, but knowing a top tier NICU is right there if needed...that is priceless and much more important than what a room looks like (although United's are quite nice).

    Best of luck!
