Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Circumsion-out patient.

I had a preemie so we are getting it done Friday. What should I be prepared for? I don't want to google. How will he feel? What can I do to help? What will it look like? Etc. I am nervous.

  • I cannot imagine what it would feel like to get part of my genitals cut off.

Good thing you're a girl and aren't living in Africa then, eh?

  • Get a big tube of vaseline and make sure they give you gauze pads.  For the 3 days we put tons of vaseline on a gauze pad and tented it over the penis.  After that, the vaseline went on the front of the diaper so it didn't stick.  I was surprised at the amount of blood there was for the first few days after, but it healed up very quickly.

  • My son was sleeping by the time they returned him from the procedure.  Some babies get sleepy, some get grumpy, some nurse more... but for the majority of babies it's not a big ordeal.
  • I would expect your DS to be uncomfortable all day. They do numb the area before (lidocaine shot to the base of the penis) and DS screamed for that. But he was fine for the actual procedure as well as every diaper change at that point. The area will be extremely red almost to the point of purple, but it will get better every day (by 1 week it was completely fine). They'll tell you to put Vaseline on it with a gauze to prevent sticking to the diaper. Sometimes they'll also tell you to pull the skin back beyond the head daily after it heals to prevent it from re-adhering. Please do this. My DS's re-adhered and let's just say no lidocaine was used that time.

  • DS's outpatient circumcision was fine.  His was done in a new-ish way, I forget what it's called but they stitch a plastic ring around it so there was really no maintenance.  I didn't have to worry about Vaseline or anything, just kept the area clean. He really didn't seem to notice anything and wasn't crying when they brought him back to me.

  • When my firstborn was born, we opted NOT to let the hospital do the circ and instead made an appt with the doc in town known for doing great circs.  She saw him at about day 10.  Put a baby bottle nipple with anesthetic gel in it over his penis and had us wait for 20 minutes, then she & my DH went into the treatment room and it was over in a few minutes (no stitches or anything).  I reacted way more than our little guy!

Upkeep was simple.  SHe had us put OTC Triple Antibiotic Salve on it several times a day for 7-10 days. That was it.

  • DS was fussy for a day or two, we gave him tylenol for pain. We applied neosporin until the plastibell fell off (it's a little plastic "mushroom" on the tip of the penis that falls off once it's healed).

  • DS barely noticed them doing it.  He only cried when they held it as they were beginning.  He was a little fussy that night but I think it was my nerves that he was picking up on.

.25mL of Tempra that night and he slept and peed with no pain (not that he could tell me in words).

It looks a LOT worse than it is (I think).  Get Vaseline and don't let anyone DOUBLE DIP!!!
