Anyone make their own baby food?

The packaged stuff works fine, but I am interested in trying to make my own baby food. DD loves to eat!!! I heard it is a lot cheaper to make your own too.

DD is 5 months old, do I need to stick with single ingredients? When can I start taking a home cooked meal for me and DH and put it in a food mill?

Right now DD eats 3 meals a day -- 6oz bottle, cereal, jar fruit for breakfast; 6oz bottle, cereal jar fruit/veg for lunch; sometimes a late afternoon 4oz bottle; then cereal and jar veg for dinner and a 6-8oz bottle. She has been on solids for 1.5 months and seems to like everything, and no reactions yet.

The pediatrician recommended waiting until 6 months before I introduce meat protein, but can I grind up brown rice and pasta with veg until then?

  • I obviously don't make it yet, but I plan to when the time comes. This is a website I have seen recommended countless times:

It is supposed to be much cheaper to make your own, and you know exactly what is going into it. I hope that helps!

  • DD doesn't eat baby food anymore, but I made all of hers when she was eating the purees.  I just steamed the fruits or veggies in the microwave and used my stick blender to puree them (some need a little water added to  get the right consistency).  I bought a couple extra ice cube trays and froze the purees in the trays.  When they were frozen, I moved the cubes into a freezer bag and just thawed a couple cubes when it was time for DD to eat.

I never used a food mill, though - I mostly just mixed DD's fruits and veggies with oatmeal or rice cereal.  How is the consistency of food that comes out of the mill?  My one caution would be to make sure that your DD can handle the consistency of the milled food.  If she likes the consistency, I wouldn't think there would be any problem with giving her the rice or pasta from the mill.

I really liked making her food, though.  I didn't find that it took too much time, and I liked not having all those little jars go to waste!  Good Luck!

  • I made baby food for both of my kids.I used Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron book to help me. This is the book:

I mostly used the reference guide in the back. Freezing the food in ice cube trays is ingenious, too.

     Happy cooking!
