After having a miscarriage and spending months wondering what I could have done to cause it, I can only imagine what kind of wreck I would have been if someone charged me with homicide because I did something they deemed reckless.
"Reckless" seems to leave open a large gray area. Was my eating a turkey sandwich last week reckless? Should I not have had that glass of wine before I knew I was pregnant? What about the super hot showers I still enjoy (that my doctor is okay with)?
Unless you define reckless, it leaves open the possibility for a woman to be charged with homicide for doing just about anything, whether it caused the miscarriage or not.

I agree. There were a couple of times I fell down while pregnant. One of them happened when I fell off the curb and hurt my leg pretty badly. It would have been the worst thing ever if something had happened to the baby. I just can't imagine how Utah could even pass a law like this.
mmc and d&c at 8.5 weeks - 8/23/2010 natural m/c and d&c at 10 weeks - 1/24/2014 DX w/ hetero C677t and A1298C MTHFR - 3/4/2014
This really is the most absurd thing that I've heard lately.... just saying 'reckless' leaves that completely open to interpretation and will only cost more money for tax payers (if they have to investigate every m/c) and cause a whole new level of grief for the woman suffering the m/c.
Is there a more credible source other than jezebel.com? I just can't imagine that something like this would REALLY pass. (and I'm not doubting you...I'm just hoping this is false or something. It just doesn't seem real, ya know?)
How horrible to suffer such a devastating loss and then be charged for murder.
Apparently it is to ban "intentional" miscarriages, but I honestly think this could have negative consequences for women.
I just still can't believe it. (not that I don't believe you or the links you've provided) just shock that that could pass. I guess I can see their intentions...but thinks it's a slippery slope and see it going very badly.
it's a slippery slope alright... but... to be a devil's advocate... what if you KNEW a woman threw herself down the stairs to cause harm to her unborn baby?
What about women who continue to smoke, drink and do drugs while they are pregnant? shouldn't they face consequences???
Re: Utah law on miscarriages...
Wow.

Ridiculous. And insulting not only to those of us who have m/s, but to all women. Plus, I don't know how they would track/enforce it.
I'm just shaking my head over here.

A step back for the state of Utah

Here is a link from the Salt Lake Tribune, before the state senate passed the bill. (written after it passed in the house.)
