Since we're on IL's and DH's today.....
My IL's, since LO was 4 1/2 months old, have asked every-time-they-call if he's crawling yet. At Christmas dinner (hosted by us as per every holiday gathering) they went into how if LO's don't crawl enough or early enough they have developmental delays. LO was then about 5 1/2 months old. FIL put him on his stomach, stood back, and said "hmm...doesn't crawl yet? that's not good.". Last weekend DH took LO to see them. He now crawls. They say, "Good, but make sure he crawls a LOT.". Babies that don't crawl enough have developmental problems down the road. I called this as b.s. and Googled it. It's b.s. as far as I can see. I also asked DH to ask them for the basis of their theory and to use Google rather than blindly listening to them.
Anyone have any evidence that IL's theory is true? I'm uP TO HERE with this.

I actually asked DD's doc about this theory.
She told me that crawling is good for connections between the opposite sides of the brain, but walking and other milestones eventually build these connections.
So back off pushy IL's!

Absolutely not. The average age for babies to start crawling is between 7 and 10 months. That's average. Some are earlier and some are later.
The only way I can see a lack of crawling leading to developmental problems is if the reason LOs aren't crawling is because their parents are inattentive and just let their LOs sit there all day like a bump on a log. Then it's not the crawling that's to blame--it's the lack of interaction.
Tell them that when they get their degrees in child development or pediatrics, THEN you'll listen to them. Until then, you're going to take advice from your pedi.
I'm feeling the same way it makes you feel. Ignorant theory. They are both Harvard PhD's who think they know everything about everything. They make me want to
DCP said when babies crawl it helps their developement. I wonder if it was a popular theory back in the day. DCP is in her 50s.
