Nurseries and Baby Gear

Alternative to painting dirty closet shelves???

We already painted the nursery, but the closet was still full of stuff so we didn't paint it.  Now that I have everything out of there to make room for baby stuff, I notice that the shelves are dirty, scuffed, marked up etc. and it has flat white paint, so wiping them out with some cleaner won't do the job.  I hate the idea of typical shelf paper, but I really don't want to paint in there, either.

Anyone have ideas or pics they can post as a solution? The room is chocolate brown and baby blue.  I've considered wallpaper, linoleum, painting only the bottoms of the shelves...  Any ideas are welcome!

  • I know you said you don't like shelfe paper, but it might do just the trick. Wallmart has a ton of it in different patterns, solids and prints.

  • I think your only options are paint and shelf liner. If you are going to paint the bottoms of them you might as well do the whole thing. Shelf liners will do the job and give it a special touch. Mr. Clean Magic erasers didnt take off any of the junk that didnt come off? We have white cabinets and they work wonders for us.

  • If you do go with shelf paper, you might want to check Big Lots. I found some cuter designs there.
  • Have you tried those Magic Erasers you find in the cleaning supplies section?  We recently moved into a house we're renting and there were kids living here.  With the Magic Erasers we were able to get crayon off the paint, scuffs off all the doors, residue on walls, all of which the owner told us would not come off because she had tried.
  • I buy wallpaper, take the shelf out and measure the wallpaper to size.  Then I use watered down white glue and brush a coat on each surface, then fold the paper over both surfaces, leaving the gap on the edge that will face the wall.

Looks very custom, the surface is washable and durable.

  • I think contact paper may be your best bet
  • Thank y'all so much for all your suggestions! I now have plenty of things to try - surely one of them will be a good alternative!
